At the foot of Mont Sacon, in the central Barousse, lies Sacoué. If you’re looking for a hotel for a stay in the village, you can plan your trip around specific interests: hiking at Pic du Tourroc, horseback riding, local products and historic sites. This makes it easier to decide in advance whether your travel days should focus on a hike, a horseback ride or the area’s cultural history.

Hiking and scenery

The 6 km hike from Sacoué to Pic du Tourroc climbs through meadows and forests. From the summit of Pic du Tourroc, there are 360-degree views across the Barousse Valley and the Pyrenean mountain range. Mont Sacon is also known for its orientation table. Sacoué is part of the ZNIEFF “Montagnes de Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges et de Tibiran-Jaunac”. The village is also one of the 25 Barousse municipalities included in the Comminges Barousse Pyrénées Regional Natural Park.

Horseback riding and local products

The Ferme Equestre du Centaure in Sacoué is an equestrian tourism centre and riding school. It offers classical and ethological riding, as well as rides ranging from one hour to a full day. The centre also offers horseback riding for people with physical, social or psychological disabilities. If horseback riding is a key part of your trip, check which activities are available before you arrive.

You can also include local products in your plans: artisanal jams are sold at Cap de la Bigne in Sacoué, and honey is sold at “Les Ruches du Mont Sacon”. If you plan a visit to either, confirm availability with the relevant supplier before you arrive.

Church and memorial sites

The church in Sacoué has a Romanesque chrismon to the right of the portal. It also contains a Romanesque holy water stoup and an 18th-century Pietà from an altarpiece. If you’d like to visit the church, ask locally about opening hours and visiting arrangements.

The Anglo-Canadian military cemetery at Pic du Douly is located in Sacoué. A 2025 report by the Canadian government describes it as the highest and hardest-to-reach Allied cemetery in Europe. The cemetery commemorates the seven crew members of a Halifax bomber that crashed on the slopes of Pic du Douly. According to a July 2024 report, a memorial service is held each year at the Commonwealth cemetery at Pic du Douly in Sacoué. The exact date may vary from year to year.

Transport and getting around

The on-demand transport service of Neste Barousse serves Sacoué. Check the timetable and reservation requirements before using it. The Col du Mortis can be reached after approximately 2 km along the road beside the church in Sacoué. Check local road and access conditions before your visit.
