Discover Villelongue
Accommodation in Villelongue
Villelongue brings together sacred architecture and a hike to the Prieuré de Saint-Orens. This gives you different options when planning your trip: the Romanesque Church of Saint Martin with its later furnishings, and a three-hour circular hike that starts and ends in the village. The D'Ortiac à Isaby route can also begin in the village; from there, additional walking time and elevation gain are involved. You can therefore decide in advance whether church art or a longer hike will be the main focus of your stay.
Churches and Sacred Furnishings
The Church of Saint Martin in Villelongue is a 13th-century Romanesque church. Its high altar has a tabernacle with caryatids, dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. Saint Martin thus brings together its Romanesque construction period and furnishings from a considerably later date. Caryatids are sculpted supports; the term gives a sense of the tabernacle’s sculptural design and adds an architectural detail to its historical context.
The reliquary busts of Saint-Orens and Sainte Patience, his mother, are housed in Saint Martin and come from the Prieuré de Saint-Orens. Their provenance thus links the church’s furnishings with the historic priory, which is also a hiking destination.
At the Chapelle Sainte-Catherine d'Ortiac, other architectural details take centre stage. It was built at the end of the 17th century and has a remarkable limewood roof structure. Inside is an original gilded wooden altarpiece—the decorative structure of an altar—with a statue of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. Alongside the date of construction, the roof’s material and the specific depiction of the saint stand out.
The Prieuré de Saint-Orens and the Landscape
The Prieuré de Saint-Orens en Lavedan lies above Villelongue, on a rocky terrace of Mont Arribaout at an altitude of 900 metres. Its ruins are among the oldest monasteries in the département. Villelongue itself lies on the edge of the Parc National des Pyrénées. The altitude refers to the priory, while the location on the edge of the park refers to the village.
Hiking from Villelongue
The route to the Prieuré de Saint-Orens is a moderately difficult 6 km circular hike lasting 3 hours. It starts and ends at Place Sallabert in Villelongue; the time given therefore applies to the entire loop. Before setting out, check trail conditions and the situation at the starting point, as local parking or trail conditions may affect access information.
The D'Ortiac à Isaby route can also be started in the village of Villelongue. Starting here adds about 1 hour and 15 minutes of walking time, as well as 200 m of elevation gain. These figures apply to the Villelongue starting point for this route, not to the total duration of the Prieuré circular hike. The time estimates therefore answer different planning questions: the three hours apply to the entire loop, while the additional time applies to joining the other route.
Along the route to the Prieuré, tree heath is widespread in dry heaths with a warm microclimate. For nature enthusiasts, this specific vegetation feature adds to the hike’s historic destination.
