Discover Albas on the Lot: Heritage and Wine
Accommodation in Albas
Albas lies on the left bank of the Lot. Perched on a rocky outcrop, the village overlooks the river and the famous Cahors wine region. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay in Albas, you can plan your days around your interests: medieval architecture, activities on the water, hiking or wine experiences. Albas offers specific places and activities for each of these interests.
Heritage and local history
In the Middle Ages, Albas was a fortified citadel, and many architectural remains have been preserved. The Porte du Pal was one of the main entrances to the fortified town and illustrates its former role. The Château d’Albas stands 50 metres above the Lot and, together with the Church of Saint-Étienne, houses the town hall. The Maison du Pal adds a place for learning about local history: the restored 13th-century building has been converted into an interpretation centre about the history of Albas. Here you can explore both traces of the fortifications and an interpretation centre dedicated specifically to local history.
The Jardin Toscan lies below the former bishop’s palace and overlooks the river. The garden is also used for concerts and conferences. If you would like to combine your stay with an event, check the date in advance; the programme may vary. The rocky outcrop offers a different perspective, with views across the Lot and the Cahors wine region.
Time by the Lot
There are picnic spots beneath the poplars along the banks of the Lot. For activities on the water, there are several specific options in the village: a pontoon at the foot of the citadel allows you to launch canoes and boats for fishing or leisure use. At Place des Gabariers, the Copeyre base offers canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding on the Lot. During your stay, you can choose between a break by the river and different ways to spend time on the water.
Hiking and wine experiences
The Albas-based Caminar association offers a range of half-day and full-day hikes, as well as longer walks to heritage sites. If you want to plan around a specific time frame, the half-day and full-day hikes are clearly defined options; the longer walks focus on heritage sites. This lets you combine duration and cultural interests when planning.
At Château Eugénie, two visit options differ in both duration and tasting. The one-hour introductory visit includes a tour of the cellar and a tasting of three Côtes du Lot IGP wines and three Cahors AOP wines. The 1.5-hour tasting option includes, after the cellar tour, three Côtes du Lot IGP wines and four Cahors AOP wines, along with toast topped with pâté and walnuts from the estate. Compared with the one-hour option, it includes one additional AOP wine, and the toast is also part of the tasting.
Caminar hike dates and the programme at Jardin Toscan may vary. Details of the Copeyre base’s operations and the visit options at Château Eugénie may also change. Before making specific plans, check the current dates and details that matter for your stay.
