Labastide-Murat brings together the history of Joachim Murat, historic architectural styles and trails of varying lengths. If you’re looking for a hotel here, these themes can shape the focus of your trip: the Château de Labastide-Murat, the Musée Murat and several hiking, cycling and horse-riding routes each offer something different.

Murat History and Architecture

Construction of the Château de Labastide-Murat, founded by Joachim Murat, began in 1807 and was finally halted in 1815. The château is built in a neoclassical style that is rare in the Quercy. Its construction history and distinctive architecture make it a cultural attraction in its own right in Labastide-Murat.

The Musée Murat bears the « Maison des illustres » label from the Ministry of Culture. It is one of the few surviving birthplaces of a Marshal of France and has preserved a typical Quercy house, with its characteristic furnishings, for 200 years. The museum also presents the original setting for the rise of Joachim Murat, a local boy, to Marshal of the Empire and King of Naples.

The local « Circuits de bourg » offer another perspective on the town’s history. Through history, anecdotes and notable figures, they convey the identity of this area in the heart of the Causses du Quercy. Alongside Murat’s life story, they also bring the stories and personalities of the area into focus.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Routes

The Promenade du Roy connects the village of Labastide-Murat with the hamlet of Goudou, following trails all the way there. It is five kilometres long, takes about one hour and 30 minutes, and is suitable for hikers, mountain bikers and horse riders. The route passes Lac de Boutanes; beyond it, there are views across the Causse.

The cycling loop La Boucle des Crêtes offers a longer ride: it is 32 kilometres long, takes about three hours and is of medium difficulty. The route passes through Labastide-Murat. Churches, châteaux and other fortified houses shape the built landscape along the way and give the ride a cultural dimension.

The variant of the GR 46 from Rocamadour to Cahors also passes through Labastide-Murat. The stage from Rocamadour to here is 25 kilometres long; the next stage also covers 25 kilometres, from Labastide-Murat to Vers. The village thus lies between two clearly defined sections of the long-distance trail: the stage from Rocamadour ends here, and the next one continues to Vers.

The two loops can be compared using their different distance and duration details: the Promenade du Roy covers five kilometres and takes about one hour and 30 minutes, while La Boucle des Crêtes is 32 kilometres and takes about three hours. This lets you compare the shorter route, suitable for several types of users, with the longer, moderately difficult cycling loop.
