Laval-De-Cère: Cère, Gorges and Hiking Trails
Accommodation in Laval-De-Cère
Laval-De-Cère lies on the banks of the Cère, right at the end of the approximately 30-kilometre-long Gorges de la Cère, which extend from Laroquebrou. The river landscape and gorge give the town a distinctive setting; hiking trails and traces of its industrial history add to the picture.
Hiking through the Gorges and the Ségala
A section of the GR 652 runs from Laval-De-Cère to Lamativie. It is about 12 kilometres long and takes approximately four hours and 30 minutes. The trail follows shaded paths through the Gorges de la Cère. The climb is easy, but rocky in places. Check the trail conditions locally before setting out.
Les Cascades Perdues is a 12-kilometre circular hike starting in Laval-De-Cère. It passes numerous remarkable viewpoints and gives you a good impression of the wild, rugged landscape of the Ségala. Although the distances are similar, the routes differ: the GR 652 leads to Lamativie, while Les Cascades Perdues is a loop starting in Laval. You can plan your hike according to whether you prefer a route with a destination or a circular trail.
The Cère and local fishing waters
The Cère flows through Laval-De-Cère and feeds a lake classified as a first-category fishing area. The local fishing waters are home to trout, perch, carp, pike-perch, tench, roach, gudgeon and eels. There is a night-fishing section for carp from June to September. If fishing is a key part of your stay, this period is a specific point to consider when planning; the seasonal dates apply to the carp night-fishing section.
Washhouse and industrial history
The old washhouse is one of Laval-De-Cère’s first tourist attractions. La Cité offers a different perspective on the town’s history: this former group of houses was provided by local industry. The workers’ housing estate was built near the factory and is still visible. During a visit, you can discover and imagine what life was like for workers in the mid-20th century. The Château de Laborie was once the residence of the lords of Merle. Together, these places offer different ways to explore the area’s history.
Railway and finding accommodation
SNCF maintains the Brive–Aurillac railway line, allowing railway enthusiasts to discover the Gorges de la Cère by train. If you plan to travel by rail, check current train services before your trip.
When looking for a hotel in Laval-De-Cère, your reason for travelling is a useful starting point. For a stay centred on hiking, the route type and the GR 652’s approximate duration are practical planning details; for fishing, the carp night-fishing season is relevant. This helps you choose a destination based on your actual plans.
