Les Junies combines a varied landscape of Causses, chestnut trees and the Masse Valley with heritage from different periods. Two specific highlights can shape your trip: the 12-kilometre circular “Autour de la Vallée de la Masse” hike and buildings with Romanesque features, later painted decoration and several construction phases. The range of themes therefore extends from the landscape to individual architectural details. You can plan your time around whether hiking or architectural history is your main focus; both are part of Les Junies’ character.

Hiking in the Masse Valley

“Autour de la Vallée de la Masse” is a 12 km PR hiking route that starts in Les Junies. This circular route passes through the Masse Valley, by small hamlets and past menhirs and dolmens. It therefore connects the landscape with cultural and archaeological points of interest. The 12 km distance is a useful reference for planning your hike. As route details may be updated, check the latest information before setting out.

Churches and wall paintings

The Église Saint-Perdufle de la Masse is a 13th-century Romanesque church. Its simple nave and rectangular apse define its basic form, complemented by tempera paintings dating from the early 16th century. The dates reveal two distinct periods: the building dates to the 13th century, while the paintings belong to a considerably later phase.

The church of Saint-Martin in Canourgues probably dates from the first half of the 13th century. Its notable painted decoration was created during renovations at the end of the 15th century or the beginning of the 16th century. Here, too, the original building and its decoration belong to different phases; the date of the church’s origins is uncertain. The church has been listed as a historic monument since 11 July 1973. The church of La Masse has an imposing bell gable and late medieval wall paintings.

Castle, Maison Cavaillé and rural heritage

The castle in Les Junies has construction phases dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as the late 15th and early 16th centuries. Its present-day appearance is mainly the result of rebuilding after the Hundred Years’ War. The Château des Junies is privately owned and has been listed as a historic monument since 21 October 1925. Check the current access arrangements and protection status before visiting.

The Maison Cavaillé has a Saracen fireplace and was designated a historic monument on 15 April 1931. The fireplace offers a different point of comparison from the dates and wall paintings of the churches. Les Junies’ rural heritage includes bread ovens, aqueducts and huts. Local heritage thus encompasses elements of rural architecture as well as the churches, the castle and the Maison Cavaillé.
