The commune of Mauroux covers 16 km², from the banks of the Lot to a high limestone plateau overlooking the Lot Valley. Its average elevation is 210 m. The landscape therefore stretches from the riverbanks to the plateau.

Churches and historic settlements

Eglise de Cabanac is a chapel whose origins date back to the 12th century. It stands among vineyards on a plateau above the vanished settlement of Orgueil and the banks of the Lot. Since 1989, the church has been listed in France’s supplementary inventory of historic monuments.

A tower, part of the residence and several outbuildings remain of Château de Mauroux. The oldest sections are believed to date from the 14th century.

Castrum d'Orgueil was a fortified settlement whose origins probably date back to the early Middle Ages. It extended along the steep slope between the Mauroux plateau and the Lot. After it was abandoned at the end of the 14th century, it was never resettled. Wall remains, recovered furnishings and other objects attest to residential and craft use; the archaeological finds include a pottery quarter dating from the late 13th century and the first half of the 14th century.

Chronologically, the historical references range from the chapel, with its origins in the 12th century, through the pottery quarter to the oldest sections of the château, attributed to the 14th century. This provides a way to distinguish religious architecture, craft activity and château history as separate historical themes. The “Châteaux et Eglises du Vignoble de Cahors” route passes through three villages and takes in three châteaux and two churches. Churches and châteaux are therefore both part of the route. Winemaking is also part of Mauroux’s character: the commune is among the places producing wines with the Cahors protected designation of origin. Along with the vineyards near Eglise de Cabanac, wine is another point of interest in the landscape and its historic sites.
