Discover Mercuès

Mercuès can be explored through its history, architecture and trails. The Château de Mercuès, Église Saint Germain and Château Les Bouysses offer different historical perspectives, while the trails bring a focus on the landscape and outdoor activities. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether architecture and local history or outdoor activity should take centre stage.

Château history and church architecture

The Château de Mercuès was built by the bishops of Cahors in the 15th century and remained in their possession until 1905. It stands on a site that has been used since antiquity, near a Gallo-Roman temple to Mercury. Two periods of history meet here: the construction and ownership history of the château and the site's earlier use.

At Église Saint Germain, the apse is semicircular and faces east; five blind arcades with conical capitals add to its design. Blind arcades are decorative, solid arches on a wall surface. Capitals sit at the top of columns or pillars. Together, the shape and orientation of the apse, the number of blind arcades and the form of the capitals shape the architectural impression.

Château Les Bouysses adds a different past to this focus: it was built on the site of a former Cistercian convent. In Mercuès, you can therefore encounter both the ownership history of the Château de Mercuès, which is linked to the bishops of Cahors, and the historical connection to a former monastic site.

A statue of the Virgin Mary overlooks the Lot valley, adding a distinct connection to the landscape alongside the buildings. Together with the ridgelines along the circular trail, it offers different perspectives on the landscape around Mercuès.

Trails and leisure in Mercuès

The Circuit de Terre Blanc circular trail runs along the ridgelines above the village and the Château de Mercuès. Its route offers a different focus from the architectural details of the church and châteaux: here, the landscape above the village takes centre stage.

The Voie Verte Mercuès–Luzech has a different character. Most of it is free of motorised traffic; it is suitable for walkers and for children learning to ride a bicycle. The two routes therefore differ in the features that may guide your choice: the Circuit de Terre Blanc runs along the ridgelines, while the Voie Verte is mostly free of motorised traffic.
