Sauliac-Sur-Célé: Célé Landscape and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Sauliac-Sur-Célé
Sauliac-sur-Célé combines the Célé landscape with the rural cultural heritage of the Causses du Quercy. The village is located in the Parc Naturel Régional des Causses du Quercy and within the Célé catchment area. The river forms the southeastern boundary of the Causse de Gramat; at Sauliac, its course is narrow and wild. The natural setting and historic buildings offer distinct points of interest for planning a trip.
Landscape and Trails
The Chemin de Pierre-Levée passes numerous dry-stone structures typical of the Causses. Along the trail are dry-stone walls, caselles and a dolmen. The route also crosses a Natura 2000 site along the cliffs of the old village. In this way, the trail connects the landscape’s stone structures with the striking terrain around old Sauliac.
Cultural Heritage in Sauliac-sur-Célé
Château de Géniès stands on a rocky promontory above a bend in the Célé. Its oldest parts may date from the late 15th or early 16th century. In the late 16th or early 17th century, the château was remodelled and partly rebuilt. This work may have been carried out by Pierre de Peyronnenc or Jean Viguier de Fraust; the attribution remains uncertain. The château thus offers a different perspective on cultural heritage from the Chemin de Pierre-Levée: here, the focus is on architectural history, while the trail showcases typical dry-stone structures in the landscape.
The Ecomusée de Cuzals is also part of the cultural offering. It is designated a Musée de France and covers 20 hectares of the Causse in the commune of Sauliac-sur-Célé. The Ecomusée is closed to visitors so that its teams can focus on this project. If you are planning a visit, check before travelling whether visits have resumed.
The chapel of Notre-Dame du Roc-Traoucat is near the GR 651. The cave chapel houses a Black Madonna. This religious landmark complements the architectural history of Château de Géniès and the stone structures along the Chemin de Pierre-Levée.
On the Banks of the Célé
The Plage de Sauliac-sur-Célé is located below the village on the riverbank. It is accessible year-round but is not supervised; swimming is at your own risk. Toilets and a water point are available on site. Before your visit, briefly check whether the facilities are available. The river and the beach thus offer a different focus from the trails and structures of the Causses.
