Sousceyrac: Heritage and Trails in the Countryside
Accommodation in Sousceyrac
Sousceyrac combines the history of a fortified feudal town with historic houses and opportunities to discover the trails and landscape. You can focus on its architectural heritage, choose a themed walk, or plan a longer outing on foot or by mountain bike. The options vary in length, duration and format—criteria that can help you plan your stay around your own interests.
Historic Town and Cultural Heritage
The former feudal town was surrounded by fortified walls and a wide moat. Access to the historic town was through the two fortified gates, Notre-Dame and Saint-Antoine. These features tell the story of the town’s former layout and the entrances to Sousceyrac.
Houses dating from the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries can still be seen today on Rue du Carreyrat. The street offers a tangible glimpse of buildings from three centuries. Sousceyrac’s heritage also includes the Church of Saint Martin and the notable building of the Ursuline convent. The houses, church and convent building add further named landmarks to the history of the fortified town.
Walks in Different Formats
The Lac des Pescofis trail is 3.1 kilometres long and includes a treasure hunt lasting about 1.5 hours. The Lac Sauvage trail is only slightly longer, at 3.3 kilometres, and is designed as a guided walk lasting about 1.5 hours. The approximate durations are therefore similar; the main difference is the format: a treasure hunt for one and a guided walk for the other. If you are planning one of these walks, you can choose based on the type of activity you prefer.
The Arboretum du Quercy au Monde adds a public, landscaped park to the options, with several dozen tree species from all five continents. The collection of plants may continue to evolve. The arboretum offers four themed walks lasting about 1.5 hours. Here, the focus is on trees and the park’s design. Along with the treasure hunt and guided walk, it offers a choice of different walking formats with similar stated durations.
Le Cayla offers a different route length: the municipality’s visitor guide from April 2026 lists the trail as starting in Sousceyrac and covering 9 kilometres. This distance can be directly compared with the shorter Lac trails, even though the format is different.
Landscape and Mountain Bike Routes
Les Jardins du Ségala is a 25-kilometre mountain bike route starting in Sousceyrac-en-Quercy. The trail crosses a preserved landscape and includes a scenic descent of winding bends to the Cayla stream. Les Hauts de Sousceyrac is another option for cyclists: the trail can also be ridden by mountain bike and passes streams, through woodland and by remote hamlets.
Details of the Les Jardins du Ségala route and conditions on Les Hauts de Sousceyrac may change; check them before setting out. The route distances also show the range of options: the two Lac trails are 3.1 and 3.3 kilometres long, Le Cayla is 9 kilometres, and Les Jardins du Ségala is 25 kilometres. You can narrow down your options first by activity format and then by the stated distance.
When looking for a hotel in Sousceyrac, you can plan your stay around your preferred focus: local history, themed walks or mountain bike trails. The different formats and route distances offer practical points of comparison.
