Albias: Nature Trails, Wine and History
Accommodation in Albias
Albias offers several specific points of interest to help you plan a stay: the Circuit des Vergers PR1 walking route, the Espace Naturel des Berges de l’Aveyron nature area, the Saint-Georges parish church, and the Domaine de Montels. If you’re looking for hotels in Albias, you can consider whether walks, local history, or wine are especially important to your stay. The places and activities below offer different focuses.
Orchards and Trails on the Circuit des Vergers PR1
The Circuit des Vergers PR1 walking route starts at Parc des Berges and follows paved side roads and paths through the Albias countryside. Numerous orchards can be seen along the way. In addition to traditional peach and plum orchards, there are apples, nectarines, and kiwis; cultivation may change over time. The route therefore combines a specific trail with views of the area’s fruit crops.
The route description passes a playground and then continues to the Aveyron. The starting point, the different trail surfaces, and this route are useful landmarks for finding your way. Check the route details locally before setting out.
A Nature Area for Relaxation and Picnics
The Espace Naturel des Berges de l’Aveyron has facilities for relaxation, picnics, and exploring the surroundings. The nature area is freely accessible year-round. If you plan your visit in advance, check access again before your trip.
The Circuit des Vergers focuses on a route through the countryside, while relaxation and picnics are among the designated uses of the Espace Naturel. When planning, you can distinguish between a described route and a nature area with these facilities.
Saint-Georges and the History of Albias
The Saint-Georges parish church is connected with the founding of the bastide of Albias around 1280. In 1621, the troops of the Duke of Mayenne destroyed the village and the church; reconstruction of Saint-Georges was completed in 1687. Its architectural features include six side chapels and brickwork on the exterior walls. The church thus links the founding of the bastide with a later period of destruction and reconstruction.
Another trace of history leads to the Moulin du Bias grain mill. It began milling on November 4, 1781, and developed into a major grain mill in the Aveyron Valley. The mill complements the architectural history of Saint-Georges with another aspect of local history: grain processing.
Wine and Tours at Domaine de Montels
Domaine de Montels offers tours of the wine-growing operation and the estate. Red, rosé, and white wines are vinified there from thirteen different grape varieties; production details may change. A half-day introduction to the vineyard includes grape picking, pressing, and tasting grape juice or wine. Check reservation and participation details in advance.
The Fête des vendanges program includes discovering the world of wine, cooking and tasting classes, manual grape harvesting, and a farmers’ market. The program may vary from year to year, so check the current edition for your trip.
