Monteils: Nature, Village History and Water Sports
Accommodation in Monteils
Monteils combines a landscape shaped by lakes with water sports and historic village views. The Parc de la Lère lies entirely within the municipality; Evasion Cable Park and the village’s history offer further concrete points of interest for planning your trip. You can therefore choose your destination based on the activities and places that interest you most.
Nature and Leisure at the Parc de la Lère
The Parc de la Lère covers about 55 hectares. It is a green area shaped by lakes, within a protected zone dedicated to conserving and enhancing wild flora and fauna. The park is home to a large colony of about a hundred geese; their numbers may vary seasonally. Nature and leisure activities are found within the same park, so you can consider both when planning your visit.
Facilities include children’s playgrounds, a sports and orienteering course, and picnic and barbecue areas. Hiking is possible on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. There is also a skatepark, as well as wakeboarding, stand-up paddleboarding and towable tubing. The activities range from exercise on land to pursuits on the water.
Fishing is also possible at the Parc de la Lère. Facilities include a family fishing course, a no-kill course for black bass, two float-tube courses and a trout pond. These named options differ in fishing style and type of water; the no-kill course is specifically for black bass.
Water Sports at Evasion Cable Park
Evasion Cable Park in Monteils can be reached via the A20 from Cahors and Montauban. Its tow system operates with two cable pulleys. The route across the lake is 400 metres long, and the speed is around 30 km/h. Both the length of the water course and the approximate speed are useful details for anyone considering this activity as part of their trip.
The cable park offers an introduction to wakeboarding, features for all experience levels and stand-up paddleboarding. You can choose between an introductory session, the various wakeboard features and paddling. If any of these activities are important to your trip, check availability in advance.
Village Views and History
A plane-tree avenue links the church, cemetery and former château in the village, passing by the former presbytery. The Château de Monteils was built by the Lacombe family in the early 18th century. In 2023, only the lower level and a few sections of wall overgrown with vegetation remained.
After 350 metres along the Parc de la Lère loop trail, the castle ruins and the Church of Saint John the Baptist can be seen on the right. The church was rebuilt after the Wars of Religion, in the early 17th century. Check local conditions and access before setting out.
Another way to explore the village in a playful way is the digital Baludik trail, “L'étrange puits de Monteils” (The Strange Well of Monteils). Together with the plane-tree avenue and historic buildings, it adds a village-focused experience to the nature and water activities.
