Castres brings together several themes that you can prioritise differently when planning your stay: art from the Iberian Peninsula, the life and work of Jean Jaurès, historic houses on the Agout, and a riverside area with walking paths. If you are looking for hotels in Castres, this distinction can help you decide what kind of trip you want to take. The attractions range from museum collections to a boat trip on the Agout, offering practical pointers for your plans.

Art, Gardens and City History

The Musée Goya is housed in a former 17th-century bishop’s palace. It has the only collection in France devoted entirely to the art of the Iberian Peninsula. Its scope extends from antiquity to the present day. This puts a clearly defined theme spanning many centuries at its heart: art from the Iberian Peninsula, viewed across more than a single period.

The Centre national et musée Jean Jaurès offers a different focus. Its chronological and thematic tour explores the life and work of Jean Jaurès. This makes it possible to compare two distinct cultural themes: a collection with a broad geographical and historical scope, and the life and work of one individual. If you want to organise your visits by theme, this distinction is a practical starting point.

The Jardin de l’Évêché adds a focus on gardens and landscape design. It has been classified as a Monument historique since 1995 and has held the “Jardin remarquable” designation since 2004. The garden’s plans are attributed to André Le Nôtre.

The Maisons sur l’Agout offer another perspective on the city’s history. The first houses date from the late 12th century. For centuries, they housed the workshops of tanners, tawers and parchment makers. Today, the houses are inhabited and cannot be visited inside. Their history can therefore be understood from their former craft use through to this present-day visitor restriction.

Along the Agout and on the Trails

The Gourjade grounds lie northeast of Castres. This extensive green leisure area stretches over 53 hectares along the banks of the Agout. Several paths are suitable for running and cycling. The grounds thus combine a specific size with two named activities; if you are planning a stay with time outdoors, these details offer useful guidance.

The Le Miredames excursion boat carries passengers along the Agout from the town centre to Parc de Gourjade and back. The trip from the town-centre landing stage to the park takes about 20 minutes. On the return journey, the boat offers views of Castres’ multicoloured wooden houses. The trip therefore combines the journey to Parc de Gourjade with a distinctive view of the houses. If you plan to take the boat, check the timetable before your visit.

The routes described also have different points of emphasis. The Chemin des Droits de l’Homme follows a former railway line from Castres via Lautrec to Albi. Castres is also on the Way of St James, specifically the Via d’Arles, where the route is marked with its own signage. You can therefore distinguish between the two: one route is defined by its former railway line and the sequence of towns, while the other is defined by its place on the Way of St James and the signage in Castres.
