Lacrouzette: Granite Rocks, Forest and Trails
Accommodation in Lacrouzette
Lacrouzette lies in a protected natural landscape in the Parc Régional du Haut Languedoc. Wooded scenery and scattered, picturesque granite rocks define the area. For planning your trip, the attractions described here can be distinguished by their character: a striking rock formation, a circular trail on the Crémaussel plateau, or a walking route starting in the town centre. This helps you decide whether to focus on granite formations and forest or on trails connected to the town centre.
Granite Rocks and Views
La Peyro Clabado is considered a symbol of Lacrouzette and is located on Pic des Fourches. The rock weighs around 780 tonnes and rests on a base measuring one square metre. These two measurements describe different aspects of the same formation: its approximate mass and the area on which it rests. Beneath La Peyro Clabado are cavities formed by erosion, known as marmites. Thus, the cavities beneath the rock are among the features of this landmark, alongside its striking exterior shape.
Another viewpoint is “La pyramide et sa table d’orientation”: the granite-sphere pyramid has a terrace with an orientation table and views over the Castres plain and its surroundings. While La Peyro Clabado stands out for its mass and the area on which it rests, here the focus is on the terrace and panorama. You can choose a natural attraction for its distinctive rock formation or enjoy the view across the landscape from the terrace.
Trails Around the Rocks and Town Centre
The Sentier des Merveilles is located on the Crémaussel plateau in the middle of the forest and combines hiking with discovery. Its yellow circular route is about 1.5 kilometres long. Viewing devices help you spot rocks hidden in the vegetation. The trail is considered suitable for families and has no major difficulties. Roc de l’Oie is also located on the Sentier des Merveilles at Crémaussel. It is open daily year-round and admission is free. Information about opening times and access was updated on 15 July 2026; check the conditions again before your trip.
The Sentier des Venelles has a different focus. It starts at Place du Théron in the centre of Lacrouzette and offers the chance to discover ancient standing stones in the heart of the community. The trails therefore differ in their starting points and character: the Sentier des Merveilles follows a circular route through the forest, while the Sentier des Venelles starts in the town centre. You can choose between a trail on the Crémaussel plateau and a walk connected to the town centre.
Notre-Dame du Granit in the Town Centre
Lacrouzette’s centre also has a cultural landmark: Notre-Dame du Granit is a neo-Gothic church built in 1892. It houses a fresco by Nicolaï Greschny and monumental engravings by sculptor Jacques Bourges. The fresco and engravings bring different artistic works together in one building. Its connection to the town is different from that of the rock attractions and forest trails: here, the focus is on architecture and art in the town centre. Along with the trails and granite formations, the church reveals another facet of the destination.
