Le Bez lies in the Parc Naturel Régional du Haut-Languedoc and encompasses two distinct landscapes. To the north, the Massif du Sidobre and its granite boulders shape the scenery. The south is part of the agricultural and wooded Plateau d’Anglès. If you are planning a stay, this north–south division provides a practical guide: the landscape and the topics that interest you can help you plan your trip.

Landscape and hiking trails

The Sentier du chemin des trois villages is 20.2 kilometres long and is listed as taking 330 minutes. The route crosses agricultural plateaus and forest areas, and follows riverbanks. It connects hamlets in the commune of Le Bez and links to other hiking trails and villages in the surrounding area. Les Sources de La Durencuse offers a shorter option in both time and distance: this hike is 10 kilometres long, takes three hours and passes through the agricultural and wooded part of Sidobre. Route details may change; check the latest information before setting out.

Granite, menhirs and architectural history

The Sentier des immortels explores the origins of this unusual landscape and the formation of the rocks of Sidobre. It also features 16 reproductions of statue-menhir figures from the Haut-Languedoc. Neolithic statue-menhir figures are also part of Le Bez’s cultural heritage. Along the trail, the distinctive landscape history of Sidobre meets a theme in the region’s cultural heritage.

Another historical landmark is the Maison-forte du Bez, also known as “le Château”. It was built in the first half of the 17th century. Its projecting corner turret makes a striking architectural statement: the ornamental design follows the model of the Hôtel Le Roy in Castres. This specific comparison helps explain the turret’s design without equating the Maison-forte with the building in Castres.

Granite itself is also a focus in Le Bez. The Espace muséologique du Granit et des Hommes presents the granite of Sidobre and how it is worked, from extraction to transformation. The visitor attraction Maison du Sidobre also includes the short interpretive trail Naissance du Granite. Those interested in stone will find several different ways to explore the subject: the unusual rocks of Sidobre, their interpretation on the Sentier des immortels and the processing of granite at the museum.

Natural heritage and things to do locally

Named natural heritage sites in Le Bez include the Rocher tremblant de la Brescarié and the Rivière de rocher, also known as Ruisseau de Sécun. The Aire de pique-nique de la Maison du Sidobre is beside a small lake. It has granite loungers and is also the starting point for the Sentier des immortels. This combination of picnic area and trail makes it easier to plan a visit to both places.

The Goûter à la ferme experience includes a farm snack made with homemade and locally sourced products. It also offers a walk around the 10-hectare estate. At Lac de la Maison du Sidobre, the Parcours pêche offers easily accessible fishing for trout in first-category waters. Official seasonal fishing regulations apply; take them into account when planning your visit.
