Magrin: Pastel history and routes
Accommodation in Magrin
Magrin combines pastel history with sacred architecture and routes through a landscape shaped by hills and plateaus. The Château de Magrin brings together a museum, pastel plants and historical objects; the Église Saint-André adds frescoes and several building phases to the cultural offering. For outdoor activities, two very different routes take centre stage: an easy circular trail that starts and ends at the “voie Romaine” car park, and a difficult cross-country route. If you are looking for a hotel in Magrin, you can decide in advance whether pastel, church art or a particular time commitment will shape your stay.
Pastel history at the Château de Magrin
On the second floor of the Château de Magrin, you can visit a museum presenting the history of pastel in the Midi toulousain. The château’s pastel dryer is one of the few examples of its kind still in good condition in the Midi toulousain. A pastel mill from a neighbouring commune has also been rebuilt in an adjacent tower. The museum, dryer and mill offer different perspectives on pastel: they cover regional history, a well-preserved example of the dryer, and the rebuilt mill. Museum visiting arrangements may change; check the latest visitor information in advance.
The château grounds also explore the theme. Depending on the season, pastel plants can be seen in their rosette, flowering or seed stages. Other basic dye plants, including indigo bush, are also presented. The grounds are also home to the old blue cart from the Lauragais. It illustrates why and how such carts have been painted blue since the Middle Ages. The plants through the seasons and the cart thus offer different points of connection with pastel history.
Frescoes in the Église Saint-André
The main building phases of the Église Saint-André date to the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries. In the sacristy on the south side, there is a vaulted fresco decoration from the 15th century, featuring foliage and angels or musical cupids. Another detail is the 16th-century frescoes in the sacristy: they are the only surviving remnants of the frescoes that once covered the church’s walls and boarded roof structure. The building phases and frescoes bring different specific aspects of the church into view, rather than reducing it to a single date of origin.
Two routes, different levels of difficulty
Le chemin du Pastel starts and ends at the “voie Romaine” car park in Magrin. It is an easy, 6.9-kilometre PR circular trail; the stated duration is 2 hours and 30 minutes. After the reservoir, the path continues for another 50 metres to a landscape information board. The route therefore combines a clearly identified trail with a specific point where the landscape is the focus. You can use the stated duration as a guide when planning your time.
La voie romaine runs from Puylaurens to Lavaur and passes through Magrin. It is a difficult cross-country route, 28.6 kilometres long, with a stated duration of seven hours. The difference is not just in distance: le chemin du Pastel is an easy circular trail, while la voie romaine is a difficult crossing with a considerably longer stated duration. This helps you choose between a shorter loop that returns to the starting point and a longer route between the places named.
Magrin’s landscape consists of hills and plateaus; its main land uses are listed as cereal fields, meadows and forests. On le chemin du Pastel, after the reservoir and a further 50 metres, you reach the landscape information board. This places the landscape information alongside a specific point on the route, while the two trails offer different time commitments and route types.
