Explore Mirandol-Bourgnounac through its landscape along the Viaur, historic buildings and several circular routes described in different ways. Seasonal activities and exhibitions are also among the local attractions. When planning your trip, your interests in nature and culture may therefore be just as important as the route you would like to take.

Nature along the Viaur

The ZNIEFF de type 1 Rivière du Viaur covers the river, riparian forests and riverside woodland, meadows, rocky areas and dry heathland. The municipality of Mirandol-Bourgnounac is also part of this area; some of it is part of Natura 2000. The landscapes covered therefore range from riverbanks and forests to open meadows and dry heathland.

The area provides a habitat for a diverse range of animal and plant life. This includes aquatic animals, as well as breeding birds in the riverside forests and rocky areas. The Viaur landscape is also the focus of several circular routes, which take in the riverbanks, valley and plateau in different ways.

Hiking trails between riverbanks, plateau and valley

The La Rivière hiking trail follows the banks of the Viaur and the Lézert before crossing the plateau and reaching a viewpoint overlooking Mirandol. L’Echappée Sauvage starts in Mirandol and leads from the plateau paths to the steep trails of the Viaur Valley. The two descriptions thus emphasize different features: the riverbanks and viewpoint in one case, and the transition from the plateau to the steep valley terrain in the other.

The Sentier de Cazouls is a shady circular route. It follows wide paths alongside the Ruisseau du Lauzentou to the banks of the Viaur, with traces of former life in the valley visible along the way. The Pont de Cirou circular route has a specified starting point, length and approximate duration: it starts at Mirandol-Bourgnounac town hall, is moderately difficult, is 6.1 kilometres long and takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. Check local trail conditions before setting out, as route information can change.

The Lo Puech Pounchut circular route is classified as difficult. Along with the details for Pont de Cirou, this rating gives you a concrete indication of the stated level of difficulty; the length and approximate duration are also provided for Pont de Cirou. You can take these known route details into account when planning your time, rather than comparing the different trails by name alone.

Historic sites and buildings

In the Middle Ages, Mirandol was a fortified village on the hillside above the Viaur. Today, only a ruined chapel remains at the historic site. These few visible remains point to a long history of settlement, while other buildings offer a glimpse into different chapters of the region’s history.

The Pont de Cirou dates from the 14th century and is considered the oldest structure crossing the Viaur. The Moulin de Pignac is located near the Pont de Cirou circular route and was restored between 2006 and 2009. The Le Vieux Moulin circular route features the watermills on the Viaur as reminders of rural life in the valleys. In the past, they were used, among other things, for grinding grain, extracting oil, fulling cloth and sawing wood.

The Église Notre-Dame de Bourgnounac contains an altarpiece from the main altar that is classified as a protected object; its protection was recorded on 9 April 1964. The altarpiece depicts the Assumption of Mary. The statues of Saint Peter and Saint Paul stand in false niches on either side.

Seasonal activities and exhibitions

At the Ferme du Pesquier du meunier, you can pick strawberries directly at the farm during the season; this offer depends on the harvest. In 2026, the farm’s offerings include untreated vegetables, farm eggs and red fruit, available in baskets and through market sales. Products and sales channels may vary.

A variety of exhibitions are presented in summer at the Grange and Stable in Mirandol-Bourgnounac. As program dates may vary, it is advisable to check the current exhibition dates before your visit.
