Vieux: Medieval Village and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Vieux
Vieux is a medieval village surrounded by vineyards and mixed farming. If you are looking for a hotel in Vieux, you can choose where to stay based on different interests: cultural heritage, a signposted hiking trail, and a market scheduled for specific dates each offer a distinct focus for your stay.
Vieux covers about 700 hectares of clay- and limestone-rich slopes. These include vineyards, cereal and fodder crops, meadows, and woodland. Viticulture is therefore one of several forms of agriculture here. The Vère flows through the village and is a tributary of the Aveyron; the river and the surrounding agricultural landscape are among the different features of the village’s scenery.
Church and menhir: traces from different periods
Église Saint-Eugène is a 14th-century building and was classified as a Monument historique on 24 February 1906. Its nave is divided into six aisles and comprises six bays. A bay is a section of the building’s structural layout and here adds another detail about the nave alongside the number of aisles. A bell tower stands on the nave’s axis at the west end; there is also a polygonal apse and several side chapels. The construction period and the classification provide two distinct dates: the 14th century dates the building, while 1906 dates its classification.
Menhir Peire Lebade takes you back to a different period: it dates from the Neolithic, is designated an archaeological site, and was classified as a Monument historique by decree on 22 March 1977. Its Neolithic origins and the later classification date refer to different aspects. Église Saint-Eugène and the menhir therefore represent distinct cultural heritage themes: a medieval church and a prehistoric standing stone.
Hiking along the Vère
The Chemin de la Vère au Saint-Hussou is a 14.2-kilometre hiking trail. It passes through vineyards and valleys and follows the banks of the Vère. Starting from the village of Vieux, the trail offers a signposted route to Menhir Sainte-Carissime. The described route follows the D1 and crosses the Vère. The river crossing and the section along its banks give the Vère a specific role on this route; the 14.2-kilometre distance is a useful guide when planning your hike.
The different names help with orientation: Peire Lebade is the menhir designated an archaeological site; Sainte-Carissime is the destination of the signposted route described here. This makes it easier to distinguish between the two menhirs when considering cultural heritage and the hiking trail for your stay in Vieux.
Market dates and local produce
From 1 July to 31 December 2026, the Vieux market is scheduled for Wednesdays. In July and August, it starts at 7 p.m.; from September to December, it starts at 6 p.m. Check the day and start time again for later visits. Local producers sell organic vegetables, naturally leavened sourdough bread, and organic wines at the market; available products may vary depending on the season and market date.
Tables and benches are available at the market for sitting and eating. In good weather, a food truck serves food there. The seating arrangements and whether the food truck is present may vary by season.
Local food truck
The local food truck “En-k à Part” offers a daily special, French fries, and tacos. The operator and menu may change, so do not assume that a particular dish will always be available.
