Clairfontaine can be explored through several distinct themes. Its history ranges from events of the Second World War to religious art and former everyday uses. There are also two clearly distinct culinary offerings, as well as games and events at La Grange des Copains. If you are looking for a hotel in Clairfontaine, these highlights can help you tailor your stay to your interests.

History and Religious Art

In May 1940, the 8th German Panzer Division encountered significant resistance near Clairfontaine as German troops advanced through the Aisne department. Local history is therefore also part of the department’s military history during the Second World War.

The Premonstratensian abbey in Villers-Cotterêts, founded in 1671, was established following the relocation of a community from Clairfontaine. This connection adds a religious history dimension to the wartime events. The abbey was located in Villers-Cotterêts; the community that relocated came from Clairfontaine. The abbey’s location and the community’s place of origin are therefore distinct.

A tabernacle in the Church of Sainte-Ursule in Clairfontaine is made and decorated in the same way as the one described in Autreppes. In the Catholic Church, a tabernacle is used to store consecrated hosts.

There are two calvaries in Clairfontaine. One is considered remarkable because its base apparently comes directly from the 12th-century abbey. A calvary is a religious monument associated with the crucifixion of Christ.

The Beauregard fountain once served as a washhouse and points to another aspect of local heritage: a former everyday function.

Cuisine with Distinctive Offerings

La Grange des Copains prepares dishes using local produce and works with beers and cheeses from Chimay. Relais de l’Ost serves traditional cuisine and Thiérache specialties, including Coq à la bière, Andouille à l’ancienne and Pot-au-feu. The distinction can help guide your choice: La Grange focuses on local produce and its collaboration with Chimay, while Relais features traditional cuisine and named Thiérache dishes.

Games and Events

La Grange offers two covered boules courts, darts and other games. In summer, inflatable games for children are also available. The activities therefore vary by type and season: boules and darts on the one hand, and the seasonal children’s activities on the other.

La Grange’s program includes themed evenings, concerts and workshops. A local report dated August 1, 2026, also describes Clairfontaine as the venue for an annual gathering of vintage tractor enthusiasts. If one of these events is a reason for your trip, check the exact date in advance.
