Gauchy: Nature, History and Culture
Accommodation in Gauchy
The town offers a range of ways to explore these themes—from Marais de la Biette to a named cycling route and the programme at the Maison de la Culture et des Loisirs.
Nature at Marais de la Biette
The park at Marais de la Biette is a haven for lush flora and fauna threatened by climate change. Work has been carried out in the protected areas with the involvement of ADREE (Association pour le Développement de la Recherche et de l’Enseignement sur l’Environnement) to preserve the ecological balance. Protecting the natural environment is therefore as much a part of its character as the diversity of its plant and animal life.
The marsh is open to residents as a place for walking, learning and sporting activities. These uses give the area several roles: it offers opportunities for relaxation, learning and exercise. So if you are interested in nature and the environment, the focus here is not only on the landscape itself, but also on its protection.
Cycling in Gauchy
The cycle paths in Gauchy are open to everyone and make it possible to cross much of the town safely by bike. One specifically named route is 1.4 kilometres long and runs from Moulin de Tous Vents to Gymnase Delaune. The route is therefore a manageable length, with clearly identified endpoints. As route details may change, it is advisable to check the municipal information before setting off.
History around Moulin de Tous Vents
Until the War of 1870, a windmill stood at Moulin de Tous-Vents; it has since disappeared. Later, on 19 January 1871, the Battle of Moulin de Tous Vents began in the area around Gauchy. Despite being outnumbered, French troops resisted for a long time. The recorded history thus links the name Moulin de Tous Vents to both an earlier mill and an event from the Franco-Prussian War, although the windmill no longer exists today.
The event also left its mark on local culture: folk couplets inspired by the battle are now part of the folklore of the Saint-Quentin area. A visit therefore offers another perspective on the region’s history—not only on what happened at the time, but also on its cultural legacy.
MCL cultural programme
The Maison de la Culture et des Loisirs (MCL) in Gauchy is a theatre for children and young people and also focuses on chanson; it is located in Picardy. Its programme includes performances for young audiences and chanson. Shows are offered during the school term and for families. The MCL is therefore a cultural venue for different age groups and a distinct highlight to consider when planning a stay in Gauchy.
Tickets for the MCL can be purchased in person, by telephone, online or by post. As ticketing options may change, check the current ways to buy before your visit.
