Holnon can be explored through several themes: the Bois d’Holnon as a large forest, sacred architectural history, a precisely dated chapter of local history, and cultural offerings at the Médiathèque. This variety helps you plan your trip according to your interests. Nature, architectural history, and culture offer different ways to understand the place; the themes range from botanical examples and historic sites to literature, film, and music.

Forest and Trails

The Bois d’Holnon covers 400 hectares and is shared between Holnon and Attilly. The forest has a botanical trail where visitors can discover examples of the tree and flower species found there. This highlights the forest’s plant life, while other aspects of Holnon are shaped by its architectural and local history. When planning a visit, access is a key consideration: following the storm of June 27, 2026, a municipal order prohibited access to the Bois d’Holnon on safety grounds until further notice. The warning was visible on the municipal website on August 20, 2026. Before visiting, check whether the ban is still in force; the botanical trail is also affected by the forest closure.

The “L’ancienne voie romaine” route forms a loop: after passing through Francilly-Selency, it leads back to Holnon. Unlike the botanical trail, which features examples of the area’s trees and flowers, this route focuses on its course and the places mentioned. The forest’s natural features and the loop’s described route therefore offer distinct themes.

Architectural and Local History

The Église Saint-Quentin in Holnon was rebuilt between the two world wars. The former Église de “Là-Haut” was built in 1436 and destroyed in 1790; a surviving bas-relief from this church is kept in Holnon town center. The two references belong to different periods: Saint-Quentin represents the rebuilding between the world wars, while “Là-Haut” refers to an older church whose relief has been preserved in the town center.

Holnon in September 1918

Another clearly dated chapter concerns the First World War. From September 14 to 19, 1918, a battle between the 6th British Division and the German Army took place in the village and the Bois d’Holnon. The events are thus associated with both the village and the forest, forming a distinct point of reference alongside the older church histories. Architectural history and the history of the battle offer different perspectives on Holnon’s past.

Other Heritage Sites

Holnon’s heritage includes the Oratoire Notre-Dame du Monde Entier. The Chapelle British Cemetery is the burial place of 622 British soldiers, 360 of whom have been identified. These figures distinguish the total number buried from the number of identified soldiers.

Culture in Holnon

The Médiathèque d’Holnon is a place for culture, leisure, and education. It offers a wide range of classics and new releases in literature, film, and music. Its collection spans several cultural fields and includes both classic works and new publications. Whatever your interests, the Médiathèque complements Holnon’s historical themes with its own cultural focus.
