Traces of different eras
A Gallo-Roman villa was built in Mercin around the middle of the 1st century BC. The former Château de Mercin belongs to a later period of construction: it was built from the 13th century onward as the seat of the lordship and residence of the lords who lived there. The château was built many centuries after the Gallo-Roman villa; from the 13th century onward, it served as the seat of the lordship and residence of the resident lords.
In 1909, the former château became the property of the municipality. The town hall, school and teachers’ residence were established there. This change from a seat of the lordship and residence to municipal uses marks a distinct later chapter in the château’s history.
