Sinceny: Faience History and Forest Landscape
Accommodation in Sinceny
Sinceny lies on a hill 102 metres high near the western edge of the Coucy Forest. The Oise borders the commune to the north, and the forest to the south. Alongside its setting, the history of faience offers a distinctive way to explore the town: it spans early designs, an 18th-century manufactory, and an exhibition in the town hall.
Roman Remains and the History of Faience
Among the oldest remains in Sinceny are the ruins of a Gallo-Roman villa at the edge of the forest, dating from the second half of the first century. The Roman Brunehaut road in Sinceny also dates back a long way: it was built at the beginning of the first century. These two sites therefore point to different periods in the town’s Roman history.
In 1737, Jean-Baptiste Fayard established a faience manufactory in former buildings that now house the town hall. The faience exhibition in Sinceny’s town hall can be viewed during town hall opening hours. Check the current opening hours before your visit. At the Biennale de la Faïence in October 2024, organised in collaboration with the town hall, collectors lent original pieces of faience from Sinceny for display. If you would like to attend a future edition, check its dates separately.
The early faience pieces can also be distinguished by specific features in their decoration. Initially, they were decorated with blue cameo designs; lambrequin decoration followed soon after. The blue design was usually picked out with red lines, and occasionally with green or yellow ones. Some faience pieces from Sinceny bear the maker’s mark “.S.” in blue between two dots on the back.
Forest Landscape and Bird Protection Area
Sinceny is part of the Natura 2000 bird protection area “Forêts picardes: massif de Saint-Gobain”. The wider forest massif of Saint-Gobain and Coucy-Basse provides further context: its size makes it a remarkable ecological complex, characterised by a diverse breeding bird population. Just over half of the massif is beech forest, crossed by narrow, winding valleys. The landscape description thus brings together woodland, valley formations and birdlife, while the Oise and the Coucy Forest mark Sinceny’s northern and southern boundaries.
Parc Saint-Lazare and Market Dates
Parc Saint-Lazare covers just over 3.5 hectares and is intended as a park open to everyone. A municipal bulletin from September 2022 lists a 300 m² boules court and fitness equipment there. It also states that the paths, sanitary facilities and one or two pieces of fitness equipment are accessible to people with reduced mobility. Check the current facilities and conditions before your visit.
The Marché Artisanal local des Nécreux offers another practical point of reference for planning a trip. From March to October, it takes place on the second Sunday of each month. From November to February, the Salle des 15 Setiers is listed as the venue. If you would like to plan your stay around the market, check the details for the specific edition before travelling.
