Viels-Maisons lies in the southern Aisne area, at the meeting point of Île-de-France, Hauts-de-France and Grand Est, and at the gateway to Champagne. The town brings together several clearly distinct historical themes: the Église Sainte-Croix and its construction and protection history, a château built in the 16th century, and the design of Les Jardins de Viels-Maisons.

Garden spaces with an earlier history

Les Jardins de Viels-Maisons were created in 1991 by Bertrande de Ladoucette on the site of a French kitchen garden already recorded in a cadastral or feudal register from 1789. The two dates represent different periods in the garden’s history: 1789 refers to the earlier kitchen garden, while 1991 marks the creation of the gardens. The park is laid out in the French style and preserves the design of the 17th century. Three major vistas, each one kilometre long, define its spatial layout. A vista directs the eye through a landscape; here, the term is made concrete by three long lines. In this way, the site’s earlier use and its later park design stand side by side as distinct aspects.

Church and château: distinct historical layers

The Église Sainte-Croix is dedicated to the Holy Cross and houses a relic of the Cross. Its oldest choir preserves an earlier barrel vault with pointed arches, supported by small columns. Its construction can be dated to the first half of Louis VI’s reign, around 1080. In the history of heritage protection, the individual feature and the entire building must be distinguished: the church nave’s portal was listed as a historic monument on 5 June 1928, and the entire church on 11 June 2024. The approximate dating of the choir thus belongs to a medieval building phase, while the protection dates concern a much later period.

In the 16th century, a branch of the de Châtillon family built a château in Viels-Maisons. The structure included a two-storey square tower and a more slender octagonal tower, two lower wings, moats and a fortified wall. The two towers differed in their ground plans and height; the wings were built lower. The moats and wall added defensive features to the complex. Alongside such buildings, the town’s former role as a post station is also part of its history: Viels-Maisons was an important post station. On 21 June 1791, Louis XVI’s carriage stopped there to change horses. This stop links the town to a specific date and its use as a post station.
