Discover Villers-Cotterêts
Accommodation in Villers-Cotterêts
Villers-Cotterêts offers a range of themes to explore: the history of the French language, a royal Renaissance castle, the Dumas family, trails connected with the former water supply, and a weekly market. If you are looking for a hotel, you can first consider which focus you would like to shape your stay. Language history, family history and walking trails each bring a different emphasis to your itinerary.
Castle and Language History
The Château de Villers-Cotterêts is the only royal Renaissance castle in Picardy. In 1539, Francis I signed the Ordonnance de Villers-Cotterêts here. It required French, rather than Latin, to be used in administrative and judicial records. The Cité internationale de la langue française’s permanent visitor route offers an interactive and engaging exploration of the French language. This brings together two distinct approaches: the historical requirement for official documents and a route that explores French in an interactive and engaging way.
The Alexandre Dumas Museum
The Alexandre Dumas Museum combines a specific type of building with a museum theme spanning several generations: it is housed in a 19th-century townhouse and preserves the memory of three generations of the Dumas family. Its year-round program includes temporary exhibitions and events such as art workshops, conferences, mystery evenings and performances. This brings together a lasting focus on the family and a changing program of events. If you would like to plan your visit around a particular format or date, check the current events calendar in advance.
Walking Trails and Waterworks
The Sentier de la Salamandre lets visitors discover the underground aqueduct network that supplied water to the town and castle. Along this trail, the Grande Allée Royale offers an exceptional panoramic view of the massif and the royal building. The route alternates between a technical and a scenic focus: the aqueduct network points to the former water supply, while the Allée offers panoramic views. The La Laie des Pots water supply network was classified as a Monument historique on July 29, 2013.
The “Dans les pas de Dumas” circular walk takes about an hour and also leads to the Dumas family museum. For detailed route planning, check the downloadable route information on site. The Cité internationale de la langue française is a six-minute walk from Villers-Cotterêts train station. These are separate points to bear in mind when planning your time: the circular walk leads to the museum, while the walk from the station leads to the Cité. Check TER information before your trip, as operational details may change.
The Thursday Market
The market takes place every Thursday morning on Place du Docteur Mouflier, rue de l’hôtel de ville and impasse du marché; the impasse leads to the covered market. As market arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit.
