Discover Hondainville: Church, Gardens and Trails
Accommodation in Hondainville
Hondainville can be explored through a variety of themes: the Church of Saint-Aignan and the Chapel of Saint-Antoine, the Jardins philosophiques de Lombardie, and trails and wetlands in the Thérain valley. The river crosses the village from west to east. This allows you to include architectural history, landscaped gardens and scenery in your travel plans.
Church, Chapel and Washhouses
The single-nave Church of Saint-Aignan is an unvaulted Romanesque building dating from the third quarter of the 12th century. Two side chapels were added in the 15th or 16th century. In 1980, the church was listed as a historic monument. Its construction history thus spans from the Romanesque nave to the chapels added later.
The Chapel of Saint-Antoine stands near the village, at the foot of Saint-Aignan Hill. It is dedicated to both Anthony the Hermit and Saint Anthony of Padua. Two washhouses each have their own connection to the locality and its history: the washhouse on the Le Lombardie stream near the church was built in 1866. The washhouse at the village entrance, opposite the Chapel of Saint-Antoine, was completely rebuilt in 2002.
The Jardins philosophiques de Lombardie
The extensive Jardins philosophiques de Lombardie are philosophically inspired gardens with architectural landscaping. Their topiary includes hornbeams, yews and boxwood. A lime-tree avenue, ponds, streams, canals and a waterfall complement the grounds; two areas in the marshland have been left in their natural state. The garden’s different features combine clipped trees and landscaped waterways with areas of wetland.
Visits are only possible as part of guided tours. A few tours are held each year from April to December, particularly during the “Rendez-vous aux jardins” events in June and the “Journées du Patrimoine” in September. Specific dates are announced on the regularly updated website. Check it before planning your visit.
Thérain Valley and Wetlands
According to the inventory description dated June 11, 2025, the ZNIEFF in the Thérain valley covers 128.4 hectares and extends across Hondainville, Heilles and Saint-Félix. Boundaries and classifications may be updated. Several ponds in this area were created through earlier alluvial extraction and were subsequently naturally recolonized by wetland vegetation. The aquatic habitats provide suitable nesting sites for numerous waterbird species.
Circular Walks and Planning Your Time
For a walk around Hondainville, “Les Butteaux” offers a clearly described option: the trail is 3 kilometres long, takes about 50 minutes and is rated easy. Check trail conditions again before setting out. The “Déambulations dans un charmant village” circular walk starts at the church on Place de l’église. Its route description, updated on July 31, 2026, gives a distance of 4 kilometres, a duration of about one hour and the same easy rating.
The two walking loops can be compared by their stated distances and durations: “Les Butteaux” is shorter, at 3 kilometres and about 50 minutes, than the 4-kilometre circular walk, which takes approximately one hour. The “Circuit des 3 communes” also passes through Hondainville; it is advisable to check trail conditions again before setting out. The “Therdonne à Hondainville” route is a different option: it connects Therdonne, Hermes and Hondainville via a purpose-built trail with very little elevation gain. The cycling version is listed as taking about 1 hour and 15 minutes.
