Muidorge and its highlights

Muidorge is set in a rural area near Beauvais. Two specific interests come together when choosing a place to stay here: the “Au chemin de Muidorge” walking trail and Saint-Lucien Church, with its architectural history and furnishings. This makes it possible to combine a visit to Muidorge with either a hike or a focus on culture. When comparing destinations, you can first consider whether you are more interested in a route for outdoor activity or in historic architecture and church history.

Saint-Lucien: Location and architectural design

Saint-Lucien stands on the northern edge of Muidorge, on elevated ground. This gives the building a clear geographical setting within the village; its architectural design tells another part of the story. The nave dates from the 11th century and has a single aisle. A nave is the church’s elongated main space; “single-aisle” means that this space was built without side aisles. The two terms describe the layout of the church interior, while its position on the edge of the village and elevated setting determine its location. When exploring Saint-Lucien, you can therefore consider its architectural design, date, and location as separate characteristics.

Furnishings and historical periods

The furnishings include the high altar and its tabernacle. Both are made of carved and painted wood and are attributed stylistically to the Louis XVI period. Their dates range in part from the 17th century and in part from the 19th century. Style and dating should be distinguished: the stylistic label describes the design, while the period references place individual components in time. A tabernacle is where the consecrated hosts are kept; a retable, by contrast, is a decorated structure behind the altar. These terms therefore refer to different parts of the furnishings, while the dates indicate several periods represented within the church.

On May 27, 1571, Nicolas Le Prince and representatives of the Muidorge parish agreed to commission a retable. The retable was to depict the apostles. The commission predates the components of the high altar and tabernacle, which are dated in part to the 17th and 19th centuries. Together with the 11th-century nave, these provide several historical reference points for Saint-Lucien: the construction date of the nave, the agreement of 1571, and the later dates of elements of the furnishings.

Walking trail and accommodation

“Au chemin de Muidorge” is a walking trail for which a GPX track is available. GPX is a file format for geographic track data that can be displayed in compatible map or navigation apps. Before setting out, you can check whether your chosen app can import the track, allowing you to include the trail in your own digital route planning. The route offers a different travel experience from exploring the history of Saint-Lucien: here, the focus is on preparing for a hike; there, on architecture and local history.
