Vez brings together historic buildings, art and walks. The Donjon de Vez combines contemporary art and medieval architecture and overlooks the Automne Valley. At the Église Saint-Martin et Saint-Léonard, different building phases can be seen; the flower-filled lanes and viewpoints over the plain are ideal for a leisurely stroll.

Château de Vez: historical building phases

Château de Vez is classified as a historic monument; its main building phases date from the 13th and 14th centuries. The main phases of the structure therefore span two consecutive centuries. At the Église Saint-Martin et Saint-Léonard, by contrast, you can distinguish between the oldest part and the later choir. In Vez, you will encounter both a classification by a building’s main construction phases and a more detailed chronology of individual parts. This offers more than one historical focus when planning a culture-oriented stay.

Donjon de Vez: art and defensive architecture

A visit to the Donjon de Vez brings together contemporary art and medieval architecture. This combination draws attention not only to the historic building, but also to art from different periods. Galleries of old and contemporary art occupy two floors; the chapel and some rooms are open to visitors. Both art periods are therefore part of the same focus for a visit. The donjon is 27 metres high. Its defensive architectural features include five massive cylindrical buttresses and machicolations on stone corbels. Its height conveys the scale of the building, while the buttresses and machicolations bring its defensive design into focus. The donjon also overlooks the Automne Valley. Its relationship with the valley adds a landscape perspective to the architecture and galleries.

Église Saint-Martin et Saint-Léonard

The Église Saint-Martin et Saint-Léonard has been listed as a historic monument since 1926. Its oldest part is the long nave, built around 1150. The choir was built around 1225/30 and is a very tall, single-aisle structure. It has a flat end, where there is a triplet window. This makes it possible to distinguish the older nave from the later choir and its distinctive features. The listing since 1926 denotes the building’s heritage status and should be distinguished from the medieval construction dates. If you are interested in architecture, you can consider the chronology and the shape of the choir as two different points of reference.

Walks through Vez

The flower-filled lanes of Vez and the viewpoints over the plain are ideal for a leisurely stroll. Here, the focus is on the village scenery and views, rather than construction dates or the donjon’s defensive features. This change of focus adds a more relaxing activity to a culture-oriented stay. If you want to explore Vez, you can plan a walk as a counterpoint to an in-depth look at the architecture and art.
