Albert combines a striking religious landmark with First World War memorial sites and green spaces for walks. The city’s walking routes also offer different perspectives: they bring together history, architecture and nature without making any single route a must-do during your stay.

The Basilica and the History of the Somme

The Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-Brébières is a Neo-Byzantine landmark in the city centre, right next to the Musée Somme 1916. Protected as a historic monument, it has been an important Marian pilgrimage site in Picardy since the 11th or 12th century. Architectural and religious history stand side by side here.

Every year in September, around 8 September, a novena is held in the basilica. Believers come from around the world for the occasion. If this date matters for your trip, the approximate timing can help you plan.

The Musée Somme 1916 is located ten metres underground in an air-raid shelter from the Second World War. A 250-metre underground passage presents the history of the 1916 Battle of the Somme. Realistic scenes depict the daily lives of soldiers of all nationalities who fought in the area. Its underground setting and historical subject give the museum visit a distinct place in the city’s history.

The “Témoins du Passé” statue trail offers another form of remembrance. It includes several 1.80-metre-high resin statues depicting different nationalities who fought during the battles of the Somme.

City Walks and Nature

The 6.5-kilometre urban trail “Albert, Histoire et Nature” brings together nature, history and architecture and runs partly along the Ancre. Its route passes behind the Basilica of Notre-Dame-de-Brébières and in front of the Musée Somme 1916. The route is rated easy; check the signage and local conditions on site.

The Vélodrome is a 24-hectare natural area in the city, crossed by the Ancre and offering opportunities for walks. Visitors can spot mallards, moorhens, swans, geese and grey herons there, although sightings are not guaranteed. For a walk with the possibility of seeing waterbirds, this area is an alternative to the themed city trail.

The Jardin public offers its own green-space experience: its features include a classified arboretum, a kiosk, a waterfall, a children’s play area and a small animal park. The park invites visitors to stroll and relax. If you’re deciding between a walking route, a natural area and a public garden during your stay, you’ll find different ways to spend time outdoors here.

Gâteau battu is also part of the local picture: this speciality is considered a regional pastry. When choosing a hotel in Albert, your preferred focus for the trip can help guide your decision: the basilica and novena represent the religious heritage, the Musée Somme 1916 focuses on the history of the battle, and the walking routes connect city history with nature.
