Aveluy brings together the landscape along the River Ancre, local memorial sites, and walking and cycling routes. This gives you a choice of different focuses when planning your trip: a visit to the municipal pond, the history of the First World War, or a longer route on foot or by bike.

Ancre Valley and municipal pond

The River Ancre flows through Aveluy. The village centre lies in a steep-sided valley running from north to south. The municipal pond offers another place to visit: it covers just over five hectares, is suitable for walks, and offers the opportunity to fish for coarse fish and predatory fish. Walking and fishing offer different ways to spend time by the pond. If your visit depends on access, check the conditions in advance. If you plan to fish, observe the applicable rules and check whether you need a permit.

First World War memorial sites

Aveluy was completely destroyed in 1916 during the First World War Battle of the Somme. At the time, Aveluy Wood served as a major ammunition and supply depot for the British Army. The Circuit du Souvenir, which features memorials to Commonwealth servicemen who fell in the First World War, also passes through the area around the village.

The Sainte-Marguerite Chapel stands on the western edge of Aveluy and served the parish for worship for many years. The reconstructed Church of Saint-Fiacre offers another perspective on local history. It is one of the sights along the Véloroute n°32 de la Mémoire; access to the church interior may vary. If visiting the interior is important to you, check access in advance.

The extension to Aveluy Communal Cemetery contains 613 First World War burials and commemorations. It was designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. After entering the village, take the first turn on the right to reach the extension. Check local road conditions before setting out.

Walking and cycling

The Thiepval-Authuille-Aveluy circular walking route is 13.5 kilometres long and takes about 4 hours and 30 minutes to walk. Check current trail conditions before setting off. This approximate duration makes the circular route a longer activity to plan for, rather than something to equate with a short walk around the municipal pond.

Aveluy is also one of the municipalities along the Véloroute n°32 de la Mémoire. The 90-kilometre cycling route connects Amiens and Arras via Corbie and Albert and is considered relatively easy. Compared with the circular walking route, it is considerably longer and passes through several places. You can plan according to the time available and whether you want to focus on a single walk or a longer cycling connection. Check the signage and route conditions before setting off.

Activities at the City-Stade

Aveluy’s City-Stade offers space for a range of activities. It is surrounded by a track suitable for running, cycling, skateboarding and inline skating. Visitors can also use a picnic table there. Unlike the signposted longer routes, this site offers several activities in one facility, as well as a place to picnic. If access or the table is important to your plans, check both in advance.
