Camon is one of the five municipalities across which the Hortillonnages extend. This waterscape, its gardens and trails give the area a clear focus for planning a trip. Alongside a ride in an electric boat, visitors can choose from walks, hiking trails and cultural and historical sights. You can tailor your visit to whether you are most interested in exploring the waterways, the landscape or the history of the buildings.

Hortillonnages: Islands, waterways and gardens

The Hortillonnages have been cultivated in their present form for around 700 years. They consist of numerous alluvial islands surrounded by 65 kilometres of waterways and drainage and irrigation channels. Camon is one of the five municipalities across which this area extends; the others are Amiens, Lamotte-Brebière, Longueau and Rivery. The Hortillonnages therefore form a landscape that extends beyond a single locality.

On a self-piloted electric boat trip, visitors can discover around 30 gardens and artistic installations where art meets nature. The trip lasts approximately two and a half hours. If you plan this activity, check the latest operating details and journey time, as both may change.

Waterside trails and hiking routes

The Chemin de Halage is a seven-kilometre circular route along the Somme, in the heart of the Hortillonnages. The route includes recreational gardens and decorated bridges; the walk follows the water and passes the gardens of the Hortillonnages. You can plan to start from Camon, Lamotte-Brebière or Parc Saint-Pierre.

The Circuit de la Canardière offers a different route option: this eleven-kilometre hiking trail runs between Amiens and Longueau. A walking route suggested by the Somme Tourism Board goes from Parc Saint-Pierre via Amiens, Camon and Rivery. The routes therefore differ not only in length: the Chemin de Halage is a circular route, while the suggested walking route connects several localities.

Before planning, check local access conditions for the Chemin de Halage and details of the suggested walking route; both may change.

Church, festival and local history

The parish church of Saint-Vast in Camon has a construction phase dating to the last quarter of the 16th century. In 1836, it was extended with a brick side aisle. The two dates refer to different stages in its construction history and place the extension in its historical context.

The Festival international de jardins | Hortillonnages Amiens was founded in 2010 to support emerging landscape designers and artists. Its founding purpose brings landscape design together with artistic work.

On the banks of the Somme between Camon and Longueau, Espace Gaston Gambier was created on the former site of the “Marais aux Bœufs.” The site's former name and its location between the two municipalities are also part of its local history.
