Friville-Escarbotin: Churches, Museum and Water Recreation
Accommodation in Friville-Escarbotin
When planning a stay in Friville-Escarbotin, you can consider cultural history and water recreation as distinct highlights. The churches differ in their construction dates and architecture; the Musée des Industries du Vimeu showcases reconstructed workshops and collections of locks, padlocks and chests. The Espace Aquatique includes a sports pool and a leisure pool. These attractions give your choice of hotel a specific local connection. Different arrangements are important for planning: the museum is open mainly for pre-booked group visits, while operating arrangements for the water facility may change.
Church architecture in historical perspective
At the Église Saint-Étienne de Friville, two widely separated construction phases can be distinguished. The choir dates from the second half of the 15th century and was built by monks from Sery Abbey; the nave was built in 1785. The two parts therefore do not date from the same period. The choir has been partially protected as a historic monument under a decree dated 29 December 1981. This protection applies to the choir and does not refer indiscriminately to the entire building. This makes it possible to consider the building’s history and the scope of its protected status separately: the nave complements the older choir, while the protection applies to a specific part of the church.
The Église Saint-Hubert d’Escarbotin was also built in stages: the choir was completed in 1842, the nave in 1843, and the spire in 1845. These dates identify individual parts of the building rather than giving a single completion date for the whole structure. Its architectural features include a single-nave plan, a polygonal apse and a portal or porch tower. “Single-nave” describes a church interior with one main nave; “polygonal” describes the many-sided shape of the apse. The construction dates and architectural terms therefore answer different questions: when parts of the building were completed and how the church is laid out.
The former Chapelle Saint-Hubert in Escarbotin is distinct from the Église Saint-Hubert. It is documented as early as 1637; Étienne de Roussé is considered a possible founder. In the case of the chapel, the focus is therefore on an early historical record and an explicitly uncertain attribution of its founding. This distinguishes its recorded history from the dated construction phases of the Église Saint-Hubert.
Workshops and collections at the Musée des Industries du Vimeu
The Musée des Industries du Vimeu is housed in an 18th-century building and opened in 1965. The age of the building and the museum’s opening date are two different points in time: the first refers to the building, the second to the institution. Visitors can see reconstructed old workshops and collections of locks, padlocks and chests; the collection spans from the 16th century to the present day. This offers two distinct ways to explore the museum: recreated workspaces and a wide-ranging selection of objects spanning several centuries.
The museum is open mainly to groups of 15 or more by prior reservation. If you plan to visit, check the reservation and visiting arrangements in advance. This lets you take the group policy into account when planning your day, without assuming that walk-in visits are possible.
Water recreation at the Espace Aquatique
The Espace Aquatique in Friville-Escarbotin is a 1,000 m² aquatic and leisure facility open to everyone. The 312 m² sports pool has five lanes. The 312 m² area refers to this pool, not to the entire facility. The leisure pool features a massage bench, a whirlpool and the “Canon Slide” waterslide. The two areas are described differently: the sports pool is defined by its area and lanes, while the leisure pool is described by its listed features. If you are planning your time around lane swimming or leisure activities, these specific differences can help you find your way. As operating arrangements may change, check the latest information before your visit.
