Lignières-En-Vimeu brings together architectural history and more recent community initiatives. The Église Saint Valery was rebuilt after the former village church collapsed; the Château de Lignières takes us from its origins in the late 18th century to the events of 1944 and its reconstruction. An award received in 2024 and a beekeeping project planned for 2021 add to this picture of the town.

The Église Saint Valery

The Église Saint Valery was built in 1872 after the former village church collapsed. It was commissioned by Count and Countess Louis van der Cruisse de Waziers. The year 1872 thus marks the transition from the collapsed predecessor to the new church. This building history provides a clear chronological reference point for Lignières-En-Vimeu, distinct from the earlier origins of the Château de Lignières.

The Château de Lignières: Construction and the War Years

The Château de Lignières was built in the late 18th century by the Riencourt-Cassini family, with a main building and two wings. This phase of construction predates by a considerable margin the events that shaped the Château during the Second World War; its original design and later changes therefore belong to different periods of its history.

During the Second World War, the Château was occupied from the end of May until 19 July 1944 by General Gerhard Garf von Schwerin, commander of the 116th Panzer Division. Within this period, on 29 June 1944, the Allied bombing took place, intended to destroy the V-1 launch site at Bernapré. A total of 746 bomb impacts were recorded in Lignières; the Château was also damaged. The dates mark different events: the Château’s occupation over several weeks and the single attack on 29 June. This helps distinguish the period, purpose and consequences.

Around 1946, the Château de Lignières was rebuilt to the same floor plan, but in a simpler, less imposing style than before. The layout was retained, while the architecture changed. The Château is private property and cannot be visited. Check before your trip whether this visiting policy is still in effect.

More Recent Local Initiatives

In 2024, Lignières-En-Vimeu received one flower in the French Villes et Villages Fleuris scheme. As a more recent local reference point, the award sits alongside the older stories of architecture and war.

A participatory budgeting project in Lignières-en-Vimeu was proposed in 2021. It was intended to teach children and residents about the way bees live and their importance to biodiversity. The project was also intended to connect the beehive’s activity with the ecosystem of the municipal pond. In this way, it addressed two interconnected scales: the way bees live and their relationship with a local ecosystem. In the project proposal, the theme of bees complemented the history of the church and Château with an approach to nature education.
