Hopfau offers tangible points of interest for different travel interests: a former hammer castle, a geotope on the Fichtelnaab River, and tours with different route connections. This lets you explore architectural history, geology and cycling as separate themes. The wider travel destination of Kemnath also offers further cultural and leisure activities.

Hammer Castle and Architectural History

The former hammer castle at Hopfau 1a is listed as a protected monument. The official Bavarian monument list dated August 18, 2026, describes it as a two-storey building with a gabled roof and rendered rubble-stone masonry. It also has a polygonal stair tower and sandstone surrounds. The building bears the date 1665 and was renovated in 1733. The details distinguish the date shown on the building from the year of its renovation. The term “gabled-roof building” describes the roof form; “polygonal” describes the stair tower’s multi-sided floor plan. The castle is located in the Fichtelnaab valley. Alongside its architectural form, this makes its precise location and two different dates key points of interest.

Geotope on the Fichtelnaab River

The geotope “Outcrops in the Fichtelnaab Valley SE of Rosenbühl” is located on the steep bank of the Fichtelnaab River, near the weir at Hopfau. Rocks from the Erbendorf Green Schist Series are exposed there. A geological outcrop is a place where rock is visible at the surface. The term in the geotope’s name therefore points to the site’s geological subject: the rocks along the riverbank. Unlike the hammer castle, the focus here is on the river setting and the rock series.

Tours with Different Route Connections

The Steinwald Trail Loop is a 25.6-kilometer mountain biking route. It can be accessed from the Fichtelnaab Valley hiking car park between Kronau and Hopfau and connects to the Fichtelnaab Cycle Route. As route conditions can change, check them before setting out. The distance, classification as a mountain biking route, starting point and connection to the cycle route provide specific details for planning this route.

The “Around the Town of Erbendorf” tour runs through the Tiefenbach Valley to the Fichtelnaab River at Hopfau. The two tours can be distinguished by their different details: the Steinwald Trail Loop is characterized by its distance and connection to the cycle route; the Erbendorf tour is described by its route through the Tiefenbach Valley and along the river at Hopfau. The route connections described are therefore distinct, and the two tours should not be conflated.

Kemnath as a Wider Travel Destination

In the wider travel destination of Kemnath, the Karpfenweg Rally is all about solving puzzles: it offers an excursion for all ages. A digital scavenger hunt by Actionbound follows the Fantastic Carp Trail past historic sights. The two activities differ in format; availability of the digital scavenger hunt may change. So check beforehand whether the digital service is available.

Kemnath’s museums also have their own cultural focus. The Musikeum is devoted to historical musical automata. Anton Heindl’s collection ranges from barrel organs to gramophones and invites visitors to touch and listen. The Local History and Firearms Museum features finds from 50,000 years of human history in the Kemnath region. Kemnath thus offers both a hands-on experience with musical automata and artifacts spanning a vast period of time.
