St. Stephan served as a fortified church. In times of danger, people and animals could take refuge there. This historical function connects the church with a specific protective purpose and brings its former role as a place of refuge to life.
Another stop on Kissing’s local history trail is the outdoor station of the 955 History Trail. Four freestanding groups of figures depict scenes from the town hall fresco; information panels explain the artwork and the Battle of Lechfeld. You can visit the station even when the town hall is closed. It is also part of the Wissenspiel app and the new circular cycling route.
The Hiasl monument was erected in 1986 in front of the old historic school building on BachernstraĂźe. The Hiasl Trail is a walking path whose name commemorates the Bavarian Hiasl. Cultural destinations in the district of Aichach-Friedberg
In Friedberg, the pilgrimage church of Herrgottsruh was built between 1731 and 1753; it is considered one of the finest examples of Bavarian Rococo. Friedberg Wittelsbach Castle dates back to a High Medieval castle built around 1257 under Duke Ludwig II the Strict. The historical connections are quite different: one is a Rococo pilgrimage church, while the other has its origins in a High Medieval castle.
In Aichach, the Wittelsbach Museum is housed in the Lower Gate. The town museum vividly tells the story of Aichach. The Wittelsbachs’ ancestral castle was located in Oberwittelsbach, a district of Aichach. Sisi Castle in Unterwittelsbach had a different historical use: it served Duke Max in Bavaria as a hunting lodge.
The Pilgrimage Museum in Inchenhofen is located in Haus St. Leonhard, a former brewery building belonging to the Cistercians. It displays iron and wax votive offerings, ploughshares, horseshoes, and neck and hand shackles, and documents the importance of St. Leonhard and the Church of St. Leonhard as a much-visited pilgrimage destination. The district’s cultural offerings thus range from architectural and town history to insights into pilgrimage.
