In Buchloe, road connections, local history, trails through the city forest and recurring markets come together as different aspects to consider when planning a visit. The town is located on the A 96 motorway between Munich and Lindau and has two exits. From Buchloe’s motorway exits, direct road connections lead via the B 12 towards Kempten and the Allgäu, and via the B 17 towards Augsburg. If you are planning a stay, you can factor these routes into your travel arrangements and then decide which local attractions will shape your visit.

Local History Museum and St. Stephen’s Church

The Buchloe Local History Museum focuses on two aspects of local history: exhibits on the history of Buchloe, as well as models and original items relating to the history of the railway in Buchloe. The museum therefore combines a look at the town’s development with a subject specifically connected to Buchloe’s railway. It also features a six-part audio guide, in which the Buchloe Grammar School’s radio club introduces some of the museum’s treasures.

St. Stephen’s Church also offers a way to explore the town’s history. It is the oldest church in Buchloe. A church rector of St. Stephen’s is documented for both 1299 and 1311; these dates therefore point to early records of the church. The museum and St. Stephen’s Church offer different starting points if you would like to learn about Buchloe’s history during your stay.

The local history museum is open on the first Sunday of every month from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Special and group tours are available on request. Check visiting hours before planning your visit, as opening arrangements may change.

Loops in the city forest and longer-distance trails

Buchloe’s city forest has several specially marked loops for hiking, Nordic walking and jogging. One named route is the Great City Forest Loop: red dots mark it in both directions, and the route extends beyond the city forest to the districts of Honsolgen and Hausen. Its markings and the directions of travel make it easier to distinguish this loop from the other routes in the city forest.

Another hiking option is to follow the Ostallgäu Hiking Trail from Buchloe to its end in Marktoberdorf. This gives you a choice between local loops in the city forest and a trail that ends in Marktoberdorf, depending on your plans.

Weekly market and Christmas market

The farmers’ market takes place every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Immleplatz. It provides a regular weekly event to factor into your visit. The Christmas market, by contrast, is held on the second weekend of Advent: it runs from Friday to Sunday at the church car park. If your visit depends on this market, it is worth checking the exact event dates for the year in question. This keeps the regular Saturday market and the annual Advent market as two distinct occasions.

Ostallgäu as a broader regional perspective

The wider travel destination of Ostallgäu has a cycling region certified by the German Cyclists’ Federation (ADFC). Its regional routes cover all of Ostallgäu, are each 25 to 76 kilometres long, continuously signposted and have their own themes. The “Schlosspark Cycling Loop in the Allgäu” quality cycling route has been awarded five stars by the ADFC. Ostallgäu also has 32 local hiking routes showcasing special natural and local treasures. These regional offerings provide a broader perspective on Ostallgäu and should be distinguished from the city forest trails as local options in Buchloe.
