Fischen i.Allgäu: Iller, Weidach and Culture
Accommodation in Fischen im Allgäu
Fischen i.Allgäu is a health resort with a therapeutic climate and comprises seven hamlets. The Iller flows through the town. When choosing your destination, you can consider the focus of your stay: walking trails and forest themes sit alongside winter sports history and church history. This makes it easy to match Fischen to your interests before choosing a hotel.
The Iller, Weidach and Walking Trails
Fischen’s floodplain forest is called Weidach. Its twelve gates tell the story of the floodplain forest and its importance to local people, while also bringing visitors closer to the forest and its inhabitants. Nature and local history come together here.
From Fischen railway station, a flat, accessible walking trail leads through the Iller floodplains to Auwaldsee. The route is around 1.5 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of about 20 minutes. Accessible does not necessarily mean step-free. The paths in Fischen’s Weidach are flat and wide, and are also suitable for people with disabilities. Conditions may vary along the route from the station; check them before your visit.
Trail Themes and Tours
In Fischen’s Squirrel Forest, an adventure trail with five stations—the “children’s gates”—shares facts about the lives of squirrels.
The “Water Trails – Towards the Source” hike follows varied walking and hiking paths along the Iller, through floodplain forests, quiet woodland sections and open meadows. The Fischen Trilogie circular walk runs along the foot of the Allgäu Alps and offers the atmosphere of a floodplain forest, views of the Iller and Auwaldsee, and a view of the Hörner range. The therapeutic-climate walking trails in Fischen and the surrounding area were developed in collaboration with the Chair of Public Health at the University of Munich and local spa physicians. Check the published details on distance and difficulty before setting out.
Culture in Fischen
The FIS Ski Museum displays exhibits on the history of alpine and Nordic skiing, as well as other winter sports. St. Verena Parish Church offers another historical landmark: its first documented consecration date goes back to 1126.
