Lindau (Lake Constance): Culture, Island History and Access to the Lake
Accommodation in Lindau
Lindau (Lake Constance) brings together architectural history, collections and experiences by the water at its attractions. When looking for a hotel, you can plan your trip around these interests: on the island, you’ll find a Baroque patrician’s residence, a historic library and a church more than a thousand years old. There is also an interactive peace forum, a guided tour, a panoramic cycling tour and a small pebble beach. These places and activities offer different points of focus, from local history to viewpoints and access to the water.
Cavazzen and the city’s history
The Haus zum Cavazzen, a Baroque patrician’s residence, is located in the middle of Lindau’s market square. The townhouse on Lindau Island was built in 1729/30 by the Swiss master builder Jakob Grubenmann. Since 1930, it has housed the Lindau City Museum. This historic building thus brings together architectural history and the history of the city. The Cavazzen Museum also offers children insights into the region’s history.
Library and peace themes
A special focus is the Former Imperial City Library of Lindau. Founded in 1538, it comprises around 13,000 volumes from the Early Modern period and is the largest historic council and citizens’ library on the northern shore of Lake Constance. The Lindau Library Museum is located in the Old Town Hall and displays this library. This makes it possible to distinguish between two different museum locations: the City Museum is housed in the Cavazzen, while the Library Museum showcases the historic library.
The interactive “friedensräume” forum at Villa Lindenhof offers a different cultural perspective. It invites visitors to engage with peace themes through sight, sound and touch. Here, the focus is on the different sensory ways of approaching a subject.
Guided tour, cycling tour and access to the water
The classic guided tour of Lindau takes in sights on the island. These include the harbour entrance with the Bavarian Lion and the New Lighthouse, the Old Town Hall with its historic murals, Maximilianstraße with its magnificent houses, the Diebsturm tower and St Peter’s Church. The stops bring together the harbour, historic buildings and the city’s history in one tour.
St Peter’s Church is more than 1,000 years old and is one of the oldest churches on Lake Constance. Its great age adds a distinctive historical note to the tour. For those who prefer to focus on exercise and viewpoints, the panoramic cycling tour offers another option: it is 26 kilometres long and leads to six viewpoints on Lake Constance. The route length offers a concrete planning guide, while the guided tour is defined by its named landmarks.
At Gerberschanze on Lindau Island, there is a small pebble beach with steps leading down to the water. Alongside the cultural sights, this adds a designated access point to the water and a cycling tour as different interests to consider when planning your trip.
