Discover Missen-Wilhams
Accommodation in Missen-Wilhams
Missen-Wilhams brings together several travel interests: a moorland area, an extensive network of hiking trails, the history of Allgäu dairy farming and winter sports. When choosing a hotel, it may be helpful to consider which of these themes you want to shape your stay. The options below range from a moorland trail and historic stops to seasonal cheese sales and cross-country skiing.
Hiking and Moorland
Missen-Wilhams has more than 80 kilometres of hiking trails, including routes with gentle elevation changes through the foothills of the Alps. When choosing a route, you can also take its elevation profile into account. The Tuffenmoos Moor Experience Trail is in the district of Wiederhofen. Three short boardwalks lead into the moorland with minimal impact on nature; the trail introduces the habitats of wet meadows, peat-cutting edges and raised bog. From Missen, you can reach Tuffenmoos via the Luimweg in 45 minutes on foot. This time may vary depending on conditions.
History and Stops Along the Way
The Carl Hirnbein Museum explores Carl Hirnbein’s life and work, as well as his pivotal role in the Allgäu’s development from impoverished arable farming to successful dairy farming. The Carl Hirnbein Experience Trail also focuses on this period: numerous stops offer insights into the time before and during Carl Hirnbein’s era, as well as life in the Allgäu. You can listen to stories at two audio stations. The trail connects Missen-Wilhams with Weitnau and can be walked in either direction.
There are play areas along the Carl Hirnbein Experience Trail. In the Weitnau Children’s Forest, these include climbing nets between trees, a swaying gorge bridge, tree swings and a giant climbing spider.
Kirbe Festival and Regional Food
The programme for Missen’s 2026 Kirbe festival includes a large market for general goods and arts and crafts outside the festival tent, with more than 100 stallholders and traders. Offerings include toys, jewellery, clothing, traditional costumes, felted and knitted goods, woodwork and culinary treats. Programme details may change from one edition to the next.
Numerous alpine huts in Missen-Wilhams invite you to enjoy coffee, homemade cakes and a light meal; individual huts’ opening days may vary. On the alpine dairy farms, milk from herb-rich alpine meadows is processed directly into cheese and butter. At Alpe Schwabenberg near Börlas, cheese is sold daily during the alpine season.
Cross-Country Skiing and Downhill Skiing in Winter
Cross-country ski trails extend across the entire municipality, and some are connected. They are groomed for both classic and skating techniques. The alpine offerings in the Bergstätt area include opportunities for skiing and snowboarding; the Thalerhöhe ski lifts in Missen-Wiederhofen are specifically mentioned. The ski area includes seven lifts in two districts, as well as two professional ski and snowboard schools with equipment rental. The runs range from easy to intermediate. When choosing between winter activities, both the sport and the stated difficulty of the runs are therefore relevant differences.
