The “Auf Seiner Spur” faith and church trail covers around 42 kilometres through the entire municipality of Oy-Mittelberg and its pre-Alpine natural and cultural landscape. It connects numerous noteworthy churches and chapels. You can explore the trail on foot or by bicycle; dividing it into three stages gives the long route a clear structure.

Churches, History and Regional Topics

The parish church of St. Michael in Mittelberg was built in 1453. It is located 1,036 metres above sea level and is one of the highest-altitude parish churches in Germany. In Maria Rain, the parish and pilgrimage church of the Holy Cross was built in 1496. In Haslach, the annual Viehscheid cattle drive in autumn is a longstanding tradition.

The Steinmeile is a natural history and geology trail around Oy-Mittelberg. It provides information about the geology of the Allgäu and the Mittelberger Rücken, the origins of the landscape and the region’s cultural history. The trail thus combines natural history and cultural history topics.

Hiking and Cycling Between Lakes and Scenic Views

Oy-Mittelberg offers easy to moderate, well-signposted hiking routes around Rottachsee, Grüntensee, Schwarzenberger Weiher and Sticher Weiher. These include numerous circular routes. When choosing a hike, you can take the different lakes and route formats into account.

The Mittelberg–Rottachsee cycling route leads from Mittelberg through woodland and meadows into the Rottach Valley. At Rottachsee, the “Moosaikreich” offers information and discoveries from the Allgäu Moor Alliance. This connects the ride through the landscape with a thematic focus on the Moor Alliance.

The Nordic walking loop on the Mittelberg Panorama Trail starts at the car park by St. Michael’s Church. The panorama trail offers views across the Alpine chain, including the Zugspitze and Säuling. Mittelberg is also home to Germany’s largest hiking bench.

Summer at Grüntensee and Winter in Mittelberg

In summer, water sports, swimming, fishing and sailing are possible in Haslach on Grüntensee. The Grüntensee Ropes Course at the bathing area in Haslach offers a family experience with its Canadian canoes. To walk around the lake, start the Grüntensee circular trail at the car park by the shooting club in Haslach; the loop is just under twelve kilometres long. This clearly distinguishes it in length from the approximately 42-kilometre church trail: it circles the lake, while “Auf Seiner Spur” crosses the entire municipality.

Many trails and themed trails around Oy-Mittelberg are suitable for pushchairs and offer play opportunities for families. In winter, Mittelberg has cleared winter hiking trails and groomed sledding slopes. The seasonal activities are therefore quite distinct: in summer, the focus at Grüntensee is on activities in and on the water, while in winter Mittelberg offers trails for hiking and sledding.
