Accommodation in Wertach
Wertach combines a history of traditional crafts and recurring customs with hiking trails and seasonal activities. If you’re looking for a hotel in Wertach, you can plan your trip around your interests and the time of year—for example, a hike, the cross-country ski trails in winter or the annual Viehscheid.
Scenery and trails around Wertach
Wertach has around 120 kilometers of marked hiking trails, two-thirds of which pass through landscape and nature reserves. The Wertacher Hörnle is known as a natural monument for its alpine rose slopes. The nearby Grüntensee is also highlighted as a place to swim when visiting from Wertach.
A special route for literature enthusiasts is the 11-kilometer Sebaldweg, which can be walked in summer. It leads from Oberjoch to Wertach, following in the footsteps of the writer W. G. Sebald, who was born in Wertach. Six steles display excerpts from his work “Schwindel.Gefühle” at the original locations. The combination of walking and literature is therefore as much a part of the experience as the scenery itself.
Winter activities and other tours
In winter, Wertach has around 15 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails, with connecting trails to Nesselwang and Oy-Mittelberg. Conditions depend on the season, so check them before making plans. At Buron, there are also specially built “BERGaufRODEL” sleds, which you ride up on the valley lift. The approximately two-kilometer toboggan run is separate from the ski slopes.
Themed trails are also part of what Wertach has to offer. Designed for leisurely walks, they take visitors from one destination to another. Guided SEGWAY tours offer another way to experience Wertach and the surrounding area. They last about an hour and a half and offer panoramic views of the Alps and Grüntensee. Listed departure times are Fridays at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., or tours by arrangement; the meeting point is also arranged individually. Confirm availability and meeting-point arrangements before your trip.
Traditional crafts, history and recurring customs
At the approximately 400-year-old hammer mill, you can watch the blacksmith at work. The forge dates back to around 1610–1620. Another historic site is Obere Mühle Wertach: its history of more than 500 years goes back to its first documented mention in 1536. Since 2018, a mill wheel has been turning there again.
The annual Wertacher Viehscheid includes a market. The Viehscheid is considered one of the oldest in the region. From Pentecost until the end of September, alphorn music is also played in Wertach every Monday, weather permitting. If you’d like to experience this custom, take both the stated period and the weather condition into account when planning.
Cheese and wine from Wertach
The Allgäuer Gebirgskellerei in Wertach produces flower wine, berry wine, fruit wine and specialty fermented wines. A wine hike combines time in nature with regional flavors and these special wines. Package details may change, so check them before planning. For private groups, the winery offers cheese-and-wine tastings by appointment in collaboration with s’ Molkefässle, featuring selected pairings. s’ Molkefässle also offers cheese lovers a cheese seminar with a variety of cheeses.
The activities have a range of focuses: trails and nature, winter activities, history or food and drink. When choosing your travel dates, consider which of these interests you most. You can check seasonal information and dates again before your visit.
