Burgsalach: Hiking and Roman Heritage
Accommodation in Burgsalach
Burgsalach is located on the plateau of the Weißenburg Jura between the Franconian Lake District and Altmühltal Nature Park. The village also lies directly on the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Upper German-Raetian Limes. Roman history and outdoor activities give this destination a distinctive character: the Roman Heritage Trail offers two hikes of different lengths; in winter, the Burgsalach cross-country ski trail is another option, depending on seasonal conditions.
Hiking the Roman Heritage Trail
The Burgsalach Roman Heritage Trail offers a short route of 5.8 kilometers, taking about 2.5 hours to hike, and a long route of 12.7 kilometers, taking about 4 hours. The difference between the two estimated times is around an hour and a half—a useful guide when choosing between a shorter and a longer hike. The trail starts next to the Burgsalach sports field, where ample parking is available.
Roman traces and routes along the Limes
The Burgus near Burgsalach is located nearby. The square Roman structure has sides measuring around 32.6 meters. According to the latest findings, it is likely to have been a Roman mansio, or inn. The German Limes Cycle Route and the Limes Hiking Trail also lead to Burgsalach. The two routes differ in their mode of travel: one is a cycling route, while the other is designated as a hiking trail.
Cross-country skiing depending on the season and snow conditions
The four trails of the Burgsalach cross-country ski trail can be combined into routes ranging from 7 to 17 kilometers. Trail 4 is 17 kilometers long and marked blue. Use, markings and conditions vary by season. Use is free of charge; the trails are groomed and maintained by volunteers from the Weißenburg section of the German Alpine Club. Whether a trail has been groomed depends on snow conditions and local volunteer activity. If cross-country skiing is important to your travel plans, check current snow conditions and trail status before setting out.
Roman heritage in the wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen destination
In the wider Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen destination, the Limes runs for around 40 kilometers across the district and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site there since 2005. The Roman Museum in Weißenburg displays Germany’s largest Roman treasure trove and houses the Central Bavarian Limes Information Center. The Weißenburg hiking route “Via Biriciana” follows old Roman roads to the Limes. The former Ansbach Hohenzollern fortress of Wülzburg stands above Weißenburg on the highest hill in the southern Franconian Jura, at an elevation of 630 meters, and is an impressive example of Renaissance fortress architecture in Germany. Weather permitting, guided tours of Wülzburg are offered from May to October; check current dates before visiting.
