Dollnstein: Altmühl, History and Nature
Accommodation in Dollnstein
Dollnstein offers different ways to experience the Altmühl region: you can explore the historic town centre, set out on cycling and hiking trails, or learn about the history of the castle and landscape. When planning your stay, it is worth distinguishing between these themes: some destinations are right in Dollnstein, while others are in the surrounding area.
Discover the townscape and its history
A medieval defensive wall surrounds the historic town centre. There, half-timbered houses and Jura houses have been preserved, giving the townscape its distinctive character. The Catholic parish church of St Peter and Paul also reflects different periods of construction: its nave is Romanesque at its core, while the choir dates from around 1300, in the Gothic period. The frescoes in the choir date from around 1320 to 1330; they were rediscovered and restored in 1877/78.
The Altmühl Centre at Dollnstein Castle is devoted to the history of the castle, the market town of Dollnstein and the entire region. The natural and cultural landscape of the Altmühl Valley is also among the exhibition themes. Highlights include the Dollnstein coin hoard. Guided tours are available on request. On certain dates, visitors can mint coins using an old screw press; check the relevant dates in advance for this activity. The museum’s educational programme focuses in particular on “medieval life and living”.
By bike, on foot or on the water
Dollnstein lies directly on the Altmühltal Cycle Route and is a starting point for tours along the river. Another option is the Dollnstein–Wellheim section of the Urdonautal Cycle Route: it is flat and runs mostly along the former railway line of the Urdonautalbahn. These descriptions refer to different route features—the riverside route on the one hand and the former railway line on the other. You can plan your cycle tour according to which of these landscape and route descriptions appeals to you most.
The 85-kilometre Urdonautalsteig begins in Dollnstein and follows the former course of the Urdonau through the “Beixenhard” natural forest reserve, via Wellheim, to Rennertshofen. The Dollnstein–Wellheim section begins at St Anthony’s Chapel; signposted access routes are available from the railway station. Check access and route details before setting off. The hiking trail and the Urdonautal Cycle Route are separate options, even though both bear the name Urdonautal.
Boat trips can start directly from Dollnstein. The Altmühl is known as Bavaria’s slowest river and is described as suitable for families and beginner paddlers. Just before Dollnstein, there is a boat access and exit point with stone steps and a wooden slide; an changing room and a portable toilet are also available on site. As access conditions and providers may change, check the current options before your trip.
Dollnstein railway station can also serve as a starting point for various leisure activities: it can be used as a base for cycling, hiking and boating. Dollnstein has its own Regional Express stop on the Nuremberg–Munich route. This means you can choose between the railway station for your arrival and planning your days, and several different activities in the town and its surroundings.
Nature and destinations nearby
The 60-hectare Mühlbergleite nature reserve is located near Dollnstein. Its landscape includes sheep pastures, distinctive dolomite cliffs, hedges and islands of shrubs, as well as surrounding deciduous and mixed forests. The Mühlberggrotte is also close to Dollnstein. It was excavated in 1947; finds span the present day back to the Palaeolithic. These include around 150 typical stone tools from the Palaeolithic Federmesser culture, dating to around 12,000 BC.
Burgsteinfelsen lies between Dollnstein and Breitenfurt and is also nearby. The 45-metre-high rock massif is used by sport climbers and offers 30 routes graded IV to IX. It is also considered one of Bavaria’s most beautiful geotopes. Details of its height, location and climbing routes help you consider this rock as a destination in its own right, alongside the town centre, cycling routes and the Altmühl.
If you are looking for a hotel for your stay in Dollnstein, the activities that matter to you can help you decide: cycling, hiking, boat trips or a visit with a stronger focus on cultural history each offer a different emphasis. The railway station, trails and historic sites provide practical guidance for planning.
