Emmerting offers concrete nature and trail options to help you plan your trip. The Lower Alz Nature Reserve includes parts of the municipality; a 5 km circular trail in the “Untere Alz” Landscape Conservation Area invites you to enjoy peace and relaxation, and the forest trail runs through Emmerting. In the broader destination of Altötting, other landscape, cycling and cultural themes expand the options.

Nature Reserve and Trails in Emmerting

The Lower Alz Nature Reserve was designated in 1990. It includes parts of the municipalities of Emmerting and Mehring, the market town of Marktl, the city of Neuötting, and the Holzfelder Forest, and covers about 760 hectares. The reserve therefore extends beyond Emmerting. A local trail option is the 5 km circular trail in the “Untere Alz” Landscape Conservation Area, which invites you to enjoy peace and relaxation in Emmerting.

The forest trail also runs through Emmerting. In the surrounding area, it can be complemented by easy hikes in the Lower Alz Nature Reserve or on the Klosterau Forest Adventure Trail. This gives you a specific circular route, a trail that passes through Emmerting, and other regional hiking options side by side, without suggesting that they form a single continuous route.

Access to the Klosterau Forest Adventure Trail is via Hohenwart. From Emmerting, drive east along the sand-surfaced municipal connector road, Alte PoststraĂźe, into the state forest. After about 600 metres, the hiking car park is on the left. This information helps you find your way to this hiking destination without assuming a walking time or the route of any additional trails.

The Wider Destination: Altötting

In the broader destination of Altötting, Altötting district lies along the Inn and Salzach rivers. A plain about 10 kilometres wide, through which the Inn flows, is bordered to the north and south by green rolling hills. Together with Mühldorf district, Altötting district is part of the Inn-Salzach tourism region. The region’s visitor information includes cycling and pilgrimage routes, museums and swimming lakes.

Another nature attraction in the broader destination of Altötting is the “Unterer Inn between Haiming and Neuhaus” wetland and nature reserve. It provides a habitat for migrating, wintering and breeding marsh and water birds. More than 25 different bird species that depend on aquatic and wetland habitats breed there. Alongside the trails around Emmerting, the wider destination also offers its own nature reserves as options for nature-focused visits.

For longer cycling tours, the broader destination of Altötting offers a popular variant of the Inn Cycle Path. From Neuötting, it runs through Altötting and the extensive Öttinger Forest to Burghausen, then past the confluence of the Inn and Salzach rivers to Marktl. The section in the Inn-Salzach region is just over 75 kilometres long. When planning your trip, take possible current detours into account.

The cultural attractions of the broader destination of Altötting add another distinct dimension: St. Anna Basilica is the largest church in Altötting and can accommodate more than 8,000 people. The octagon of the Chapel of Grace probably dates back to around the year 700 and is believed to be Germany’s oldest central-plan building. The Golden Steed in the Altötting Treasury was made in 1404 in Parisian court workshops. The range of themes thus extends from nature and cycling to architecture, building history and craftsmanship.
