Dießen am Ammersee: Nature, Lake and Local History
Accommodation in Dießen am Ammersee
Dießen am Ammersee offers several distinct ways to enjoy a stay: activities in the lakeside gardens, nature watching on the edge of a protected area, a route directly through the town and historic buildings. If you are looking for a hotel for your trip, you can decide whether birdlife and natural surroundings, activities on the lake or local history are your priority.
Activities in the lakeside gardens
The lakeside gardens right by the water bring together two different activities: a nature-themed miniature golf course and pedal boat or rowing boat rentals. Boats can be rented for a fee at several locations. Your choice therefore depends on the activity you prefer: a round of mini golf by the shore or a rented boat on the water.
Nature and birdlife
The nature observation tower stands at the edge of the approximately 600-hectare “Vogelfreistätte Ammersee-Südufer” nature reserve. The area is home to around 130 breeding bird species and serves as a resting place for many migratory birds. It is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas and part of the internationally significant Ammersee wetland under the Ramsar Convention. Breeding birds and resting migratory birds illustrate two of the area’s functions over the course of the year. Please observe the posted access restrictions.
Route and event date
The King Ludwig Way runs directly through Dießen. The Diessen Pottery Market is traditionally held on Ascension Day; the 2026 event was scheduled to take place in the lakeside gardens from May 14 to 17.
Architectural history and craftsmanship
The dates associated with the former Mariae Himmelfahrt monastery church mark two milestones: it was completed in 1739 under Munich master builder Johann Michael Fischer and elevated to the status of a minster in 1988. On Herrenstraße, the Wilhelm Schweizer and Babette Schweizer pewter foundries keep a family tradition more than 200 years old alive. The Pewter Café, with an exhibition in its courtyard, welcomes visitors. If you would like to visit the Pewter Café, check current visiting arrangements in advance.
Landsberg Am Lech as a wider travel destination
Lake Ammersee lies entirely within the district of Landsberg am Lech. As part of the wider Landsberg Am Lech travel destination, it is Bavaria’s third-largest lake after Lake Chiemsee and Lake Starnberg, and a popular destination for local recreation. The lake offers boat trips, water sports and scenic lakeside promenades, as well as sporting and cultural activities amid the natural surroundings of the Bavarian Alpine foothills.
The city of Landsberg am Lech offers other cultural attractions. The Bayertor has stood since 1425 and is considered one of Bavaria’s finest Gothic buildings. The Mutterturm is an exceptional monument to historicism, built by Herkomer in honor of his mother. The Landsberg am Lech City Museum on Leitenberg combines local history with contemporary issues and offers one of the finest views of the city.
