Fuchstal: Chapels, Markets and Pond Landscape
Accommodation in Fuchstal
Fuchstal brings together historic buildings and memorial sites with a protected pond landscape. Markets in Leeder and the Forests and Ponds Tour add recurring events and a route through the region.
Chapels and Monuments in Leeder, Asch and Seestall
In Leeder, the church, chapel and Marian column tell of different periods of construction and decoration. The nave and choir of the Catholic parish church of the Annunciation of Mary were rebuilt from 1739 onward; the church received its first furnishings between 1742 and 1752. In the center, at the junction with Kirchberg, stands the stone Marian column, featuring a depiction of the Immaculate Mary dating from 1889. It is probably the fifth in a succession of earlier wooden statues.
At the southern edge of Leeder stands the wayside chapel of St. Ulrich. Inside is an oversized painting of Saint Ulrich by Johann Baptist Baader. In Asch, the Maria im Stock pilgrimage chapel was built by Freyberg in 1703. These different sites each have their own character: the history of the parish church is followed by a chapel with its large-format image of a saint and a pilgrimage site with an early construction date.
Seestall also recalls different chapters of history through two separate monuments. At the western entrance to the village, Canon Johannes Schrott had a monument erected in 1900 in honor of King Ludwig I of Bavaria. East of the village, on the banks of the Lech, a memorial stone erected in 1950 commemorates the Seestall subcamp of Kaufering concentration camp. The prisoners from Seestall camp who died before 1945 are buried at this site. The memorial therefore marks a somber chapter in the village's history.
Market Days and a Tour Through the Region
The Leeder markets continue a tradition whose origins date back to the 17th century. The spring market takes place on the first Sunday in May, and the autumn market on the second Sunday in October. Both are held on the main street in Leeder. If you are planning your trip around a market, check the latest dates before you travel.
The Forests and Ponds Tour starts at the sports grounds between Asch and Leeder, follows the Via Claudia cycle path north, and leads into the district of Asch. Further through the surrounding region, the route is mostly flat, passing ponds and following shaded paths through the largest contiguous forest area in the Landsberg am Lech district. The tour complements the historic sites with a route through woodland and pond landscapes. Before setting off, check local signs and conditions.
The Maria Stock pilgrimage chapel is occasionally open. Check locally before visiting to find out whether it is open.
Pond Landscape and Snack Garden
The chain of ponds known as the Welden ponds is a protected landscape and was created for fish farming around 300 years ago. Its valley, with mixed forests and green spaces, offers opportunities for peaceful recreation. The landscape thus combines its historic use for fish farming with the present-day character of a protected valley.
In March 2023, more than 130 edible wild plants, trees, shrubs and berry bushes were planted in the Asch snack garden, on two adjacent triangular plots. This adds a distinct garden-focused aspect to the village, alongside its historic buildings and ponds.
