Discover Ansbach: Literary Trails, Museums and Nature
Accommodation in Ansbach
When visiting Ansbach, you can focus on a variety of interests: literature and local history, museums about crafts, nature or swimming. The destinations are spread across several towns, giving your stay a range of different themes.
Literary Trails and Local History
In Wolframs-Eschenbach, the Franconian Literary Trail follows a 2.2 km accessible circular route around the town’s fortifications. Fifteen information boards feature authors from the Middle Ages to the present day whose works engage with Franconia. The trail thus combines a clearly defined loop with a literary theme spanning a long period.
The Löhe and History Trail in Neuendettelsau takes a different historical approach. It takes you back to the 19th century, when Pastor Wilhelm Löhe worked there. The trail leads to various stops in Neuendettelsau and to the churches in Reuth and Wernsbach; each stop has an information board. Along the way, you can visit the Löhe Era Museum and the Mission One World Exhibition. This trail therefore focuses on historic sites and two visitor attractions.
Museums, Crafts and Architectural History
The “wiegen & messen” (Weighing & Measuring) Museum in Königshofen displays more than 4,000 exhibits. These include historic scales and their weights, as well as measuring rods, folding rulers and containers for measuring grain. The collection explores various historical units of measurement and measuring instruments. In Bechhofen a.d. Heide, the German Brush and Broom Museum’s permanent exhibition presents household implements alongside specialized brushes and paintbrushes from crafts and industry. Both museums offer insights into objects from everyday life and work, but each has a different focus.
Wittelshofen is home to the LIMESEUM, the central museum for the Limes World Heritage Site in Ansbach district. In Feuchtwangen, the Romanesque cloister offers another way to explore history: it is an important testament to the town’s early monastic history and was built as part of the Salvator Monastery, whose structural core can be traced back to the 12th century. The cloister has also served as a venue for the Feuchtwangen Cloister Plays since 1949. Its Romanesque arcades form an open-air theater; the program varies from year to year.
Nature, Trails and Water
The Frankenhöhe Nature Park covers around 1,100 km² and lies within the districts of Ansbach and Neustadt a.d. Aisch–Bad Windsheim, as well as the independent city of Ansbach. It is the source of the Altmühl, Fränkische Rezat and Zenn rivers and is particularly well suited to recreation thanks to its landscape. Information on hiking and cycling trails and ranger tours can help you plan your visit to the nature park.
At Hesselberg, the Hesselberg Trail leads to viewpoints and provides information about the mountain’s nature, history and geology. Guided hikes on a variety of themes are also offered there. Groups can book them individually; specially designed tours are also available for children’s groups, birthday parties, school classes and holiday programs. The options range from a trail for independent exploration to themed group tours.
Krummweiher is located southeast of Königshofen a.d. Heide. From the Dorfstraße bus stop, it takes about 15 to 20 minutes to reach it on foot. The Wörnitz River Bath lies directly on the Wörnitz, on the connecting road between Wassertrüdingen and Reichenbach. Visitors can swim there in a lagoon-like shallow-water area with filtered water from the Wörnitz. Facilities include a water slide, a children’s mud-play area, a playground and a volleyball court. In Unterschwaningen, the park at Dennenlohe Castle, covering about 26 hectares, is another natural attraction.
When planning your trip, you can choose between literary and historical themes, collections, nature trails and swimming spots. If you are looking for a hotel in Ansbach, first decide which interests you want to shape your stay, then plan your routes to the specific places you have chosen.
