Mömbris: Pilgrimages, Circular Routes and Historic Traces
Accommodation in Mömbris
Mömbris can be explored through a range of interests: the terrain changes along the Kahl, there are running and circular routes around Mömbris, and two pilgrimages lead to Walldürn. There are also historic traces in Strötzbach and Mömbris, as well as a place of remembrance in the district of Schimborn. When choosing where to stay, the main consideration is whether you want to plan your travel days around a pilgrimage or focus on local paths and places.
Landscape along the Kahl
Along the Kahl, the flat terrain gives way to some steep climbs all the way up to the Hahnenkamm. The contrast ranges from flat ground by the Kahl to climbs leading up to the Hahnenkamm.
Pilgrimages to Walldürn
The pilgrimage of the Catholic parish of St. Cyriakus and Valentinus in Mömbris takes place on the weekend after Pentecost: a four-stage journey from Friday through Monday, including both days, along the route to Walldürn and back. You can also take part on individual days. As the date varies with Pentecost, you can plan accordingly for your travel year.
The bicycle pilgrimage is separate: since 2004, it has taken place on the Sunday after Pentecost, from Mömbris to Walldürn. There are repeated breaks along the way, with spiritual reflections. Both pilgrimages are scheduled around Pentecost, but have different time frames: the multi-day series of stages runs from Friday to Monday, while the bicycle pilgrimage takes place on Sunday.
Running and circular routes
There are three circular routes around Mömbris for runners, Nordic walkers and walkers. On the signposted running routes, you can choose distances between 2.75 and 10 km. The 10 km Panorama Loop can be shortened using three differently marked route options. When choosing a route, you can distinguish the overall distance range from the explicitly stated shortcut options for the Panorama Loop.
Historic places and place of remembrance
The historic double mill on the Kahl in Strötzbach is a popular photo spot. Only the site of Mömbris Castle remains; the clearly visible plateau lies east of the old cemetery in Mömbris.
In the district of Schimborn, the place of remembrance can be reached on foot or by bicycle from two sides. A sturdy bench and a seating area offer a place to rest and linger.
