Those choosing Scherstetten as a destination can plan their visit around architectural history, hiking trails and a cycling tour in the associated municipality. The parish church and its ensemble provide a cultural focus, while the trails offer a variety of themes and routes. The wider Augsburg destination adds its own cultural and natural attractions to this local perspective. These should be understood as regional destinations, not as features of Scherstetten.

Parish Church and Village Centre

The Catholic Parish Church of St Peter and Paul was begun as a Baroque replacement building in 1710 by Sebastian Ortler and completed in 1762. The Late Gothic tower of an existing building was incorporated into the new church. As a result, two clearly distinguishable construction phases meet at the church: the Baroque building and the older tower. Those interested in architectural history will find a specific point of reference here, without reducing the building to just one period.

The village centre is also shaped by several buildings: together, the church, the rectory, the parish barn and the parish stable (storehouse) form an ensemble. To appreciate the connection to the village, it is therefore worth looking at the group as a whole. The parish church’s architectural history and the ensemble in the village centre offer two different perspectives on Scherstetten’s architectural heritage.

Hiking Trails and Cycling Tour

The Way of St James passes the Berghöfe farms at the level of Schloßberg. The herb trail in the Schmutter Valley, newly laid out in 2007, has a different focus. The two trails differ in their orientation: the pilgrimage route is identified by a specific place along its route, while the herb trail’s theme is indicated by its name. If you plan to visit the herb trail during your stay, check current conditions before setting out.

A cycling tour is also available in the associated municipality: the Karl Vogele Cycle Route passes through the Konradshofer Flur and is an approximately 20 km circular route from Konradshofen via SchwabmĂĽnchen and back to Konradshofen. The approximate distance and the named places give the loop a clear shape. It differs from the two hiking trails both in its mode of travel and in its circular route.

More Trails in the Wider Augsburg Destination

The wider Augsburg destination has more trails, each with its own themes and route types. The LandArt Bonstetten art trail is a 5.65-kilometre circular hiking route. Along the trail, the artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures. Art, sculptures and its circular route shape its character.

The three-kilometre Meditation Trail leads from the Oberschönenfeld Cistercian Abbey to Weiherhof and runs along the edge of the Schwarzach Valley forest. Unlike the circular route in Bonstetten, this trail centres on two named destinations and its route along the edge of the forest. The comparison can help with choosing: one trail is a circular hike featuring sculptures, while the other leads to a destination and is designated as a meditation trail.

Cyclists can also enjoy a regional focus in the wider Augsburg destination: the Augsburg district has a well-developed cycle network. The Stauden, Holzwinkel and Reischenau regions are among the landscapes of Augsburg — Western Forests Nature Park. Westwood Alpacas offers regular alpaca hikes and excursions through the nature park. The range of activities in the wider destination thus extends from cycling and hiking to art and alpaca experiences.
