If you are looking for a hotel in Bad Kohlgrub, you can plan your trip around your own interests: a cycling route, hiking destination, moorland landscape or local culture. The area’s trails and cultural attractions differ considerably in character.

Trails and Nature Experiences

Bad Kohlgrub is a stop on the Lake Constance–King’s Lake Cycle Route. The Meditation Trail in the Blue Land begins here and ends in Ettal. The town is therefore a stop on one route and a starting point for the other. Hörnle is a hiking destination and can be reached on foot or by cable car. Check the current timetable before planning a cable car trip.

The themed trail “Catch the Wolpertinger – Moritz in the Peat Bog” leads through meadows, forest and moorland, and includes a moorland nature trail. The Bad Kohlgrub Moorland Nature Trail is 1.51 km long and follows a circular route. The two destinations are therefore clearly different: at Hörnle, the focus is on the hiking destination and the choice between walking and taking the cable car; on the themed trail, it is the landscape along the way and the moorland nature trail.

Churches and Music

After the plague epidemic of 1633/1634, the community built the Rochus Chapel on the plague cemetery of the time as a votive church and dedicated it to St. Roch, the patron saint against plague. The restricted access is important for visitors: the main door leads into a small anteroom; the chapel itself is closed off by a barrier and can only be viewed from there. Check the access arrangements again before visiting, as they may change.

St. Martin’s Parish Church is in the center of Bad Kohlgrub; most of its interior is designed in the Rococo style. This gives St. Martin a different character from the Rochus Chapel, with its votive history. The Ammergau Alps Classical Music Days offer music every year. Check the current events calendar for specific dates and venues.

In the wider destination of Garmisch-Partenkirchen

The wider destination of Garmisch-Partenkirchen offers additional natural and cultural attractions. At Partnach Gorge, visitors can walk between imposing rock walls and experience the water roaring below. The gorge was declared a natural monument and opened to visitors in 1912. The Richard Strauss Institute is housed in the historic Villa Christina in Partenkirchen’s spa gardens and features a permanent exhibition on Strauss’s life and work. The Werdenfels Museum in Garmisch-Partenkirchen was founded in 1895 from a private collection and is one of the most important museums of its kind in Bavaria; in the Zugspitze room, visitors can see the original 150-kilogram summit cross of the Zugspitze. Wank, Partenkirchen’s local mountain at 1,780 meters, is ideal for leisurely mountain hikes with panoramic views. The Wank cable car runs directly from Garmisch-Partenkirchen to the summit. If you plan to take the cable car, check the current operating conditions.
